The Selection Criteria:

Swimming Canada has created a fairly unique selection criteria for Canadian swimmers. They’ll be choosing any swimmer who makes the “Top 16” cut (chart below) if they finish in the top three in any event. However, if any swimmer finishes in the top 3 of an event and medalled at last year’s world championships in the same Olympic event they’ll be added to the roster as a priority (for example, if Ryan Cochrane finishes third in the 1500m freestyle and the first place swimmer doesn’t make the “Top 16” cut, he would go instead of the swimmer who placed first).

The hope is to send three swimmers in every event, and qualify enough swimmers to compete on a relay. Swimmers can also qualify for the relay events assuming that the top four swimmers create a combined 4x200m free or 4x100m free time (from flat starts plus a subtraction of 1.8 seconds) that fits the “Top 8” standard.
