The Arizona State men’s swimming & diving team have signed Finnish Champion and European Championship qualifying diver Heikki Makikallio to join their incoming class for the fall of 2014. He’s the biggest announced addition to this year’s men’s class for the Sun Devils so far.
Arizona State has had a lot of success over the last couple of years in their diving group, including 2014 All-American Riley McCormick who was 2nd on the 3-meter. McCormick, however is graduating, and this group doesn’t have a ton of depth behind him.
Enter Makikallio, who is a platform specialist. He was 15th (out of 16) at the 2013 European Diving Championships. While McCormick did not dive Platform as a senior, it was an event he has competed in twice at the Olympic for Canada, and Arizona State has produced plenty of platform stars in the past in addition to him.
Arizona State has formerly been home to a Finnish diver, over a decade ago. Joona Puhakka was a four time NCAA Champion for the Sun Devils in the early 2000’s.
