Ella Eastin Breaks Another NAG Record, Taking Out 200 Fly

PAC-12 – WOMEN

Stanford freshman Ella Eastin, who remains 18-years old through March 28th, has broken a National Age Group Record in a 3rd event of this week’s Pac-12 Championships in Federal Way, Washington.

After previously clearing the 200 IM and 400 IM records, Eastin on Saturday swam a 1:51.96 in the 200 yard fly. That broke the record of her current Stanford teammate Janet Hu, who in 2014 swam a 1:52.92 while swimming for NCAP on the east coast. Before Hu, another Stanford Cardinal held the record – Elaine Breeden.

In Hu’s record-breaking swim, she was out in a 53.67 and closed in 59.25. While Eastin was a hair slower on her first 100 (53.98), she held her form much better in the last 100, splitting 57.98 to more-than-make-up the difference.

Eastin now ranks 7th in the all-time rankings in the 200 fly. The 2013 Junior World Champion in the 400 IM will have another crack at her own record in finals, and then again at the NCAA Championships in mid-March, before aging up.

It would have been interesting if fellow Orange County swimmer katie McLaughlin was no injured. McLaughlin is a meters swimmer though.
