Miami (FL) hosted Florida State for a women’s dual meet on Friday, falling to the Seminoles in a 157-143 decision.
Florida State was fantastic in the 200 fly, posting a 1-2-3 finish. Edith Jernstedt led the way, clocking a 1:59.53. She took the race over on the third 50, splitting 30.38, and was able to hold on through the finish. Next in was Sophie Freeman, swimming a 2:00.56, followed by Aryanna Fernandes in 2:04.48.
They were almost as dominate in the 100 fly, earning a 1-2 finish. It was Jernstedt who claimed victory again, swimming a 54.13. Freeman was second in 54.64, narrowly getting her hands on the wall before Miami’s Giulia Carvalho (54.87).
Jernstedt was a triple event winner on the day, also taking the 200 IM in 2:01.56.
Gloria Muzito also picked up a win for FSU, swimming a 50.59 in the 100 free, touching as the only swimmer in the field under 51 seconds. It was another 1-2 punch for the Seminoles, with Zsofia Kurdi taking second in 51.03.
Sophie Freeman clocked a 2:01.53 to win the 200 back, inching away from Miami’s Kate Sommerstad on the final 50. Sommerstad came in second with a 2:01.99, having led slightly at the 100m turn.
FSU also grabbed a win in the 100 back, where Sarah Evans posted a 55.25, swimming the fastest split in the field on both 50s of the race.
Miami’s Adrianna Cera was fantastic in the distance races on Friday, winning the 1000 free and 500 free. In the 1000, Cera posted a 10:13.07, leading teammate Aino Otava (10:15.68) into the finish. Cera then went on to clock a 4:58.49 in the 500.
Giulia Carvalho led a 1-2 charge for Miami in the 50 free, swimming a 23.29. Jacey Hinton touched second in 23.47.
Tara Vovk, who transferred to Miami after completing her undergrad at Northwestern, took the 100 breast in 1:01.63. Florida State’s Julia Mansson came in second, swimming a 1:02.09. Despite being about half a second behind Vovk in the 100 breast, Mansson was dominant in the 200 breast, clocking a 2:13.84 to finish nearly three seconds ahead of Vovk.
