East Carolina Receives Verbal from Winter Juniors Qualifier Katie Knorr (2021)

Katie Knorr of Salisbury, NC has announced her intention to swim for East Carolina University beginning in the fall of 2021. Her twin sister Emily Knorr recently committed to swim for the University of West Virginia’s class of 2025.

Katie shared the news of her own commitment by stating, “I am excited to announce my verbal commitment to study and swim at East Carolina University! I would like to thank all my coaches, family, and friends who have helped me get to where I am today! I can’t wait to be a Pirate,  join my brother, Ethan, and continue the legacy!”

Knorr swims year-round for Mecklenburg Swim Association. Last summer she represented her team at the 2019 Futures Championships in Greensboro where she swam the 400m IM, 200m back, and 200m IM. She made it back to the B-final in the 400m IM, placing 17th. She ended up dropping 2.2 seconds in finals for a personal best time of 5:06.42. She also earned a best time in the 200 back (2:26.52).

She most recently competed at the North Carolina Senior Championships. She earned personal best times in the 100 IM, 200 breast, 200 back, and 500 free. She placed 17th in the 100 IM (1:02.77), 19th in the 200 breast (2:26.14), and 13th in the 500 free (5:08.74). Knorr earned a Winter Junior Nationals cut in the 200 back. She finished 9th in prelims with a time of 2:04.32. In finals, she moved up to second with a time of 2:00.66. She came from behind Emily Brown of SwimMAC Carolina to earn the silver medal. Her previous best time of 2:03.15 was from December 2019.

Knorr is finishing her junior year at Salisbury High School. She swam the 100 back and 200 IM as well as 2 relays at the North Carolina 1A and 2A Central Region Championships. Salisbury opened the meet with a silver medal in the 200-medley relay. Emily Knorr led off the relay on back, Anne Grace Woolly followed on breast, Katie Knorr swam fly, and Phoebe Hollingsworth powered home. She was able to remain ahead of East Surry High School’s Haley Joyce to secure second place. Knorr earned a second silver medal and a best time in the 200 IM behind Emme Nelson of Community School-Davidson. She later raced to the wall in the 100 back to earn the gold medal (59.19). Knorr touched the wall 1.93 seconds ahead of the next swimmer. Emily Knorr, Katie Knorr, Hollingsworth, and Sage Huffman ended the meet with a bronze medal for their performance in the 400-free relay.

Knorr’s best time would have placed her in the B-final of the 200 back and 400 IM at the 2020 American Athletic Conference Championships. When she joins East Carolina in the fall of 2021, Knorr may be the team’s second-fastest 200 backstroker behind Jodi Ogle and their third-fastest 400 IMer behind Adela Vavrinova and Sara Niepevola. Katie will be joining her brother Ethan Knorr at East Carolina, as he is a member of the men’s team’s class of 2022.
