PITTSBURGH – Duquesne swimming won 114-110 over Buffalo on Friday night, winning five out of the 11 events but tallying more overall points.

“I was extremely proud of the way the team performed today,” said head coach Dave Sheets. “It was a total team effort for the divers in Buffalo to the swimmers in Towers. The team is in a really good place from a training perspective and we will continue to build on what we are teaching in practice to prepare for February.”

Sophomore Orla Egan won the 1,000- and 500- yard freestyle with times of 10 minutes and 28.2 seconds and 5:04.96, respectively, while freshman Kayla Johnson won the 50 free (23.61) and took first-place in the 200 free relay.

In the 200 IM, senior Emma Menzer took first-place with a time of 2:05.25 while sophomore Haley Scholer was right behind her in second at 2:06.46.

The other three swimmers that joined Johnson as winners in the 200 free relay were senior Sydney Sherman, junior Leah Reisker and junior Gaby Jenkins. The group of four finished the race in 1:35.55, which is a new Towers Pool record.

In addition to the five wins, the Dukes finished second in four other events.

Junior Molly Brennan finished second in the 200 free with a time of 1:55.68. Scholer finished the 100 back in 56.09, just 0.04 of a second off of first-place. Junior Abby Mele’s time of 1:05.03 was good for second-place in the 100 breast.

Scholer, Johnson and Brennan all finished in the top-two in three different events.

Duquesne travels to Marshall next Friday and Saturday for two days of events.

PITTSBURGH – The University at Buffalo women’s swimming and diving team (0-2, 0-1 MAC) fell to the Duquesne Dukes (5-1, 0-0 Atlantic 10) on Friday night by a score of 114-110.

The Bulls opened the meet with a victory in the 400 medley relay. The team of Mia NaccarellaKatie PollockClarice Fisher, and Toni Naccarella finished first with a time of 3:48.44.

Mia Naccarella was victorious in the 200 freestyle and the 100 backstroke with times of 1:55.24 and 56.05-seconds, respectively. Toni Naccarella took first in the 100 freestyle in 50.79-seconds.

The Bulls went 1-2 in the 100 butterfly, with Amanda Neeb finishing first with a time of 55.86-seconds and Clarice Fisher taking second in 57.26-seconds.

Katie Pollock won the 100 breaststroke in 1:04.69, and UB capped off the meet with second and third-place finishes in the 200 freestyle relay. The team of Ellie Duley, Nicole AguilarAmanda Neeb, and Sawyer Bosley finished second in 1:35.93.

The Bulls’ diving team begins Day Two of the UB Diving Invite on Saturday at 11 a.m. The UB swimming and diving squad is back in action on Friday, Jan. 20 as the team travels to Toledo, Ohio to take on Toledo and Ohio.
