DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke swimming and diving program opens the 2021 calendar year Saturday as the Blue Devils host a meet against Queens University of Charlotte at 11 a.m. at Taishoff Aquatics Pavilion in Durham, N.C.

THE COMPETITION

Duke will face Queens for the eighth time in program history, but this meet will look a bit different. The meet Saturday will not be scored.

Queens, one of the top Division II programs in the country, will come to Durham on short rest, competing against Lenior-Rhyne Friday afternoon before Saturday’s meet. Recently, Queens topped Wingate in both the men’s and women’s competitions, winning 151-111.

In its short history against Queens, the Duke men hold a 6-1 record all-time. In the last meeting, the Blue Devils won 147-115 at Queens on Jan. 11, 2020.

On the women’s side, Duke is 7-0 all time. Most recently, Duke topped Queens last season, 172-89, at Queens.

DUKE IN THE POLLS

The Duke women’s team stayed at No. 16 in the most recent edition of the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America TYR Poll.

DUKE ENJOYS RECORD TIMES AT DOWD INVITATIONAL

The Duke swimming and diving team recorded an abundance of strong times the last time out at the Janis Hape Dowd Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C, to close out their fall season.

Overall, Duke boasted 110 career-best times. Of those 110 times, 32 reached the top-10 charts in school history and 10 of them made it into the top five of their respective events. Duke broke one school record as well.

Freshman Sarah Foley was the lone Blue Devil to break a school record over the weekend in Chapel Hill. In just her second meet, the Philadelphia, Pa., native swam a 2:08.96 in the 200 breaststroke for the fastest time in Blue Devil history.

Of the 10 times that broke into the top five in school history, Foley recorded three of them. In addition to her school record in the 200 breaststroke, she found herself second in program lore in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.06) and 200 individual medley (1:57.44).

Junior Cole Reznick also recorded multiple times that placed in him the top five in two events. He kicked off the meet with a 3:49.36 in the 400 individual medley, the second-fastest time in school history. Then, later in the week, he touched in 1:45.70 in the 200 individual medley for the third-quickest time.

Senior Quinn Scannell enjoyed a great meet at the Janis Hape Dowd Invitational, placing in the top five in three individual events and winning the 200 freestyle. Her winning time of 1:47.45 in the 200 freestyle was the fourth-fastest at Duke.

Foley wasn’t the only Blue Devil to have success in the 200 breaststroke as sophomore Kayle Park was right on her heels. Park swam a career-best 2:11.96 and became the third Blue Devil to go under 2:12 in the event. She currently sits third on the all-time chart.

Freshman Emily Lenihan also recorded a top-five time in just her second collegiate meet. The backstroke specialist touched in 1:56.79 in the 200 backstroke for the fourth-fastest time in Duke history to win the ‘B’ Final Saturday night.

On the men’s side, junior David Hallaron recorded a career-best time of 1:44.31 in the 200 backstroke to move to second in Duke history. His time won the ‘B’ Final as well.

Sophomore Charlie Gingrich garnered a career-best time in the 100 butterfly. His time of 47.25 vaulted him up the school charts to hold the fourth-fastest time at Duke.
