Dubai Now Home to World’s Deepest Pool at 196 Feet

There’s a new world record for deepest swimming pool as Deep Dive Dubai has opened in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The pool is 60 meters deep (about 196 feet) and is roughly 15 meters deeper than the previous record held by Deepspot in Poland.

Opened on July 7, 2021, Deep Dive Dubai contains 14 million liters of fresh water. That is the same amount as about six Olympic-sized pools. The water cycles through a filter every six hours to maintain safety and hygiene. The pool is also four times bigger than any other diving pool in the world and is kept at 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit). That temperature eliminates the need for a thick wetsuit.

The pool contains an underwater city that is designed to look as if it were abandoned. Some of the activities to do underwater, besides exploring the great depths, include playing a game of foosball, chess, or pool. The underwater city is so vast that it takes multiple dives to explore the whole site.

The site offers various programs for all levels of divers 10 years old and above. Scuba and freediving courses are offered for those who desire to learn. Discovery scuba, snorkeling, and freediving are designed for non-certified divers. Guided freediving and scuba diving at depths up to 30 and 60 meters are offered for certified divers. To ensure safety, the pool is equipped with 56 cameras monitoring divers and includes a hyperbaric chamber that can fit up to 12 people in case of emergency.

In addition to the explorations that can occur in the water, the site contains activities for out of the water. A restaurant allows non-diving family members and friends to view the pool and divers through windows and TV screens displaying the 56 cameras.

Deep Dive Dubai at first was open only by invitation, and the Crown Prince of Dubai, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, was the site’s first visitor. Actor Will Smith was also one of the first to be invited to the pool.

The pool is now open to the public. The experience does not come cheap, however: ticket prices range from $109 USD to $490.

In freediving, speed is not the goal. Records are in meters for depth and length and in time for static apnea. Freedivers usually swim slowly because speed burns their oxygen fast. Current depth world records in constant weight with a monofin are 131m for men and 122m for women. An experienced and fast freediver with a good monofin can probably go to -60m and back in 60-70 seconds.
