Douglass Adds 100 Breast, Johnston Adds 800 Free, Carson Foster Drops 200 Free at Worlds

Kate Douglass has added the 100 breaststroke, David Johnston has added the 800 freestyle, and Carson Foster has dropped the 200 freestyle for the 2024 World Championships that begin on February 11th in Doha, Qatar.

Douglass was already expected to compete in the 50 and 100 freestyles, 200 IM, 200 breaststroke, and the 50 butterfly. Now, Douglass adds the 100 breaststroke, bringing her total to six individual events. Douglass is not the only entry for the US in the 100 breast as Piper Enge is also entered in the event.

This will be Douglass’ first time swimming the 100 breaststroke at a major international meet. She notably just swam a personal best in the event in the middle of January as she swam a 1:06.67 at Pro Swim-Knoxville.

Also adding another event to his lineup is David Johnston. Johnston adds the 800 freestyle after originally being entered in the 400 free and 400 IM. Johnston is notably the American Record holder in the SCM 800 freestyle.

Carson Foster has dropped the 200 freestyle from his event lineup. He now will focus on both IM events as his only entries are in the 200 and 400 IMs.

The US roster has undergone a lot of change in the last week. Early last week, Claire Weinstein and Katie Grimes decided it “made more sense to stay closer to home” as there were “many factors that went into the decision” according to Coach Ron Aitken. With their decision to not compete in the pool events, four girls were added to the roster for the US. In addition to Grimes and Weinstein, Will Gallant also dropped out of the meet.

Later last week, Rachel Klinker was added to the US roster for the women. Klinker brought the women’s roster to eight women while the men’s roster includes 12 men.

I only just now noticed that Sjostrom is swimming the 100 free in Doha. Didn’t think she would be after not swimming it at the Luxembourg meet.

And Li Bingjie not swimming the 800 !

At Euro Meet Sjostrom tested her 100 free in the lead-off of 4×100 free mixed: 53.66 her time.

Why are the squads so small? Can we even field competitive relays?

No.

Didn’t you read the many Swimswam articles that explained why USA is sending smaller team?

Hint:
Most swimmers who qualified declined to go. Also, USA (and Australia) already qualified for all relays for Paris.

Mixed medley relay with Armstrong, Fink, Curzan, Douglass would be in contention for gold.
Men should be fine with Armstrong/Fink/Casas/King on the medley.
I’m sure they could field a mixed free relay with King/Casas/Armstrong and CC/KD.
The medley for the females could be Curzan/Enge/Klinker (59 in summer)/Douglass which could certainly medal.
Men could field slightly competitive Free relays, but the questionable part would be if a B team could make it through prelims.
Same with girls Free relays although they have less upside in the free relays.

Actually all the USA relays may have trouble getting through prelims with their B squads aside from the men’s medley…I haven’t taken a dive into the depth of all the other countries relay lineups, but maybe other countries will be in a similar spot and need to put their A squad in the prelims swims (USA may not have that luxury with how many swims CC & KD have)

I think Kate has said she won’t be swimming any relays.

Did you see her go 53.1 free and 1:06 PR in breast literally 16 min apart in at Knoxville Pro Series (unrested)? She handles doubles remarkably well and can do some triples too. She’s not doing any relays, so it should be manageable.

I imagine it’s a bit of a test run. And in Paris she’ll probably have at least 3-4 extra relay swims so without that she’s got bandwidth for an extra event.

It’s kinda dumb Grimes isn’t swimming in the pool. She’s still doing open water, and tbh she needs to get use to doing a quick turn around from open water to the pool and vise versa if she wants to succeed in both this year.

Are you referring to her 16:04 1500 that was 20 seconds off her PB from last year? Cause if so, I agree but you have to remember that she still went 4:31 in the 400 IM at the end of the meet. I’m not sure if it was anything to do with having open water before.

That’s disappointing we won’t see Foster in the 2free. I suppose he’s focused on winning the IMs with Marchand absent.

Given her sprint ability it’s kind of weird that she hadn’t prioritised the 100 brst more, although it’s possible her technique doesn’t hold up as well swimming brst at a higher stroke rate I guess.

Perhaps she’s swimming the 100 now to work on driving more speed for her cadence in the 200.

Yep. If she wants to break 200 WR, she needs to get her 100 down to 1:05.

Chikunova swam 1:04.9 during the week she broke 200 WR

Watching her in Knoxville, she continues to improve her 100BR. Looking forward to seeing it at World’s.

the fact that she went out in a 1:07 in the 2 breast last months speaks volumes about what she has to offer in a 100 breast. I dont know that she will make podium but she certainly has a chance. I think.
