On the first night of the 2018 Speedo Sectional Championship in Buffalo, Madelyn Donohoe won the women’s 800 free, while Kyle Iorizzo took the men’s 1500 free.

Donohoe took the 800 free with an 8:44.19, staving off Easop Lee, who finished in 8:44.77 and was making up a little ground on Donohoe at the end. Donohoe’s splits were slightly inconsistent, starting out in 1:01.5 on the first 100, then going a pair of 1:05s, then a pair of 1:06s, then up to 1:07, back down to 1:06, and she posted a 1:04.0 on the final 100. Her time was a little off her best time of 8:41.54. Lee split the race a little differently, going out in 1:02.4 on the first 100, then posting a 1:05, and her splits gradually slowed till she went 1:07 on the 7th 100, then threw down a 1:03.8 on the final 100.

Iorizzo won the 1500 by 10 seconds, passing runner-up William Barao at around the 1100 mark, and opening up a large lead on him in the final 400. Iorizzo was nearly 7 seconds off his best time, but he split the race very well, going low 1:05 100 splits for the bulk of the race. On the other hand, Barao’s best time is 15:41.55, and he slowed down consistently throughout the race. His 2nd and 3rd 100s were 1:02 and 1:03, and his last 4 100s were 1:07.8, 1:07.7, 1:07.6, and 1:05.62.
