Dolfin Swim of the Week: Daiya Seto’s 1:55.98 in 200 IM

Disclaimer: Dolfin Swim of the Week is not meant to be a conclusive selection of the best overall swim of the week, but rather one Featured Swim to be explored in deeper detail. The  Dolfin Swim is an opportunity to take a closer look at the context of one of the many fast swims this week, perhaps a swim that slipped through the cracks as others grabbed the headlines, or a race we didn’t get to examine as closely in the flood of weekly meets.

At last week’s Tokyo Open, Japanese star Daiya Seto went 1:55.98 in the 200 long course meter IM – faster than he went while winning World Champs gold over the summer.

The 25-year-old Seto bettered his own personal-best in the event, taking two tenths off the fastest time of his career. Seto was 1:56.14 to set a personal best and win the World Championship in Gwangju last summer. He becomes the first man this season to crack 1:56, and moves to #1 in the world this season, ahead of a 1:56.25 from Wang Shun of China.

Last season, only one man in the world was faster than Seto’s time from Tokyo: Australian Mitch Larkin at 1:55.72. The year before that, only Chase Kalisz (1:55.40) was faster. All that is to say that Seto has already put up a time that would win a major international medal most years, and Seto still has about eight months to prepare for the next Olympics, which will take place in the very city where he just dropped his big world-leading swim.

Seto had a lot of great swims across a wide range of events in Tokyo last week, including a lifetime-best 2:08.98 in a relative off-event, the 200 breast.
