Destin Lasco Comes Within .01 of Michael Andrew’s 100 Back 13-14 NAG

2016 U.S. OPEN SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS

It’s been a good day for America’s backstroke youth.

First, Regan Smith pummeled a certain Missy Franklin’s 13-14 NAG record in the 100 back, posting a 1:00.31 and slicing almost two full tenths off of what Franklin went back in 2009.

Minutes later, Destin Lasco, who’s broken many-a-NAG-record in his young career, came within a hundredth of the boys’ 13-14 NAG record, which is held by Michael Andrew.

Split comparison

  • Andrew, 2014: 27.97/28.86 (56.83)
  • Lasco, 2016: 28.06/28.78 (56.84)

That’s a huge time drop for Lasco, who previously sat at #13 on the 13-14 list with a 58.34– he lopped exactly 1.5 seconds off of his old best time.

U.S. 13-14 100 back rankings

  1. Michael Andrew 56.83
  2. Destin Lasco 56.84
  3. Benjamin Ho 57.39
  4. Vinny Marciano 57.46
  5. Ryan Murphy 57.76

Of note, world record holder Aaron Peirsol holds the 7th fastest time in the 13-14 age group (57.99) from 1998.

Lasco qualified for a B final appearance at the U.S. Open with his time this morning, and will be gunning for that NAG record in finals tonight.

4,11 in height and swimming 56.84? Damn.
Grown female swimmers like Missy franklin are 6,1 and are swimming 58./59 secs. 4,11 seems too short for that type of time. Just saying.

How tall is destin lasco?
He looked really small and short at age 11 or so. I hear some saying he,s taller now. A six footer?
If so that,s a big growth spurt in a short time. Great time from him though.

I thought Michael Andrew scratched this race, but no, he was back there in 17th with a 57.43 🙁

Destin Lasco reminds me a lot of Aaron Peirsol – big but not enormous, absolute stud across the board, but peerless in the backstrokes among his age group. I remember Peirsol breaking 2:00 in the 200 back at age 15 – absolutely stunning, but I believe Lasco can do that as well.

MA will be the first to acknowledge the record when he’s there at the pool. He’s just that classy. It was a nice swim by the kid, but unlike some of the younger record holders, he’s basically a back specialist like Ryan Murphy was/is. He’ll hold the record until some other kid breaks the record, but Lochte, Dressel, Murphy accelerated their game as they got older and stronger. See if this kid can do the same.

I agree with the backstroke specialty…but he just broke MA’s 200 Free SCY NAG from 2014…1:38.24! He also swam 21.24 in 50 Free (SCY) and 1:44.35 in 200 Back (SCY) prior to his 200 Free in two hour session! What I think was remarkable, his splits in the 200 Free…49.12/49.12…meaning there is a lot potential in the free events!

There are worse things you could be called than SMOOTHSWIMMER. He was a legend around here during his brief run.

Congrats Destin!
A huge time drop. Too bad for the record but it’s not the most important. And there’s still another possibility tonight.
The most important is the progression year after year.
56.84 (for the moment) and 2.03.28 this summer vs 1.00.23 and 2.09.27 last year.
52.65 in the 100 free a few weeks ago to show that he’s not just a backstroker.
My favorite US age group swimmer on the men’s side is on the right track.
Congrats to his coach Dimitar Petrov too.

Bobo, you would like Destin’s 200 Free SCY from last Sunday…1:38.24 breaking Michael Andrew’s previous NAG from 2014…you would love his splits…49.12/49.12!

I’m not trying to take sides or encourage anything, but I have to admit he is nailing the Bobo impression. He could have swapped the name to “BOBO G1G1” and I would not have known it wasn’t you.

It is striking to me the difference in these records compared to world-class times. It really shows the early development in females and the need for your body to develop in males. Regan Smith’s time was about 1 second from being truly world-class/Olympic finalist. Destin Lasco’s was about 4 seconds. Crazy.
