Women’s Recap
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (January 29, 2022) – In its final tune-up prior to the North Coast Athletic Conference Championship on February 9-12, the No. 3 Denison University women’s swimming & diving team posted a 185-104 victory over NCAA Division I Youngstown State University on Saturday.
The Big Red won all 12 of the swimming events they participated in, had first-place finishes from eight different competitors in the individual races, and saw Alix O’Brien, Esme Wright, Claire Moody, Emma Pritchett and Tara Culibrk each earn a part of two wins on the day.
The meet started strong as the combination of Lauren Richner, Olivia Lantry, Pritchett and Culibrk won the 200 medley relay.
Then in the first individual race of the day, the 1000 freestyle, O’Brien (10:33.52) finished first and was followed by Tara Witkowski (10:39.31) in second and Taryn Wisner (10:48.36) in third.
Wright won the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:57.10 and Moody won the 100 backstroke with a time of 59.80 seconds.
The streak of wins to start the meet continued for Denison as Devin Javens won the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:08.35 while Zoe Barclay was second at 1:09.28.
The Big Red then went 1-4 in the 200 butterfly as Emma Berdelman (2:10.15) was first, Pritchett (2:10.42) was second, Maria Mrosko (2:12.07) was third and Rebecca Martin (2:15.91) was fourth.
Grace Kadlecik (24.82 seconds) and Culibrk (25.01 seconds) finished in first and second in the 50 freestyle; and then Culibrk (53.70 seconds), Amber Croonquist (54.84 seconds) and Natalie English (55.58 seconds) took each of the top three spots in the 100 freestyle.
Moody (2:07.05) and Grace Kacmarek (2:09.20) took first and second in the 200 backstroke; Wright (2:24.59), Savannah Sargent (2:28.61) and Javens (2:28.81) went 1-2-3 in the 200 breaststroke; and then O’Brien (5:12.03) and Wisner (5:20.31) went 1-2 in the 500 freestyle.
The 12th straight win in the pool to start the meet for Denison came via the 100 butterfly where the Big Red took each of the top four spots. Pritchett (57.29 seconds) was first, Croonquist (58.91 seconds) was second, Berdelman (59.25 seconds) was third and Avery Vogen (1:00.43) was fourth.
On the 1-meter board, Maggie Seftenberg led Denison with a fourth-place finish and a score of 217.50. The 3-meter dive saw Seftenberg take third with 244.43 points while Kerstyn Johnson was fourth with 243.38 points.
Denison returns to action at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 9, with the first of four days at the 2022 North Coast Athletic Conference Championship at the Trumbull Aquatics Center.
Men’s Recap
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (January 29, 2022) – The No. 2 Denison University men’s swimming & diving team posted a 180-113 victory over NCAA Division I Youngstown State University in what was also the Big Red’s final tune-up prior to the North Coast Athletic Conference Championship on February 9-12.
The Big Red logged 10 event wins as Richie Kurlich and Trey Ike each took part in three of those wins while Sam Myaard had two individual wins as well.
The meet started strong as Liam Picozzi, Kurlich, Ethan Bevill and Ike combined to win the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:33.15.
In the first individual race of the day, the 1000 freestyle, Myaard (9:39.47) was first and was followed by Lucas Conrads (9:50.94) in second and Tyler Distenfeld (9:56.39) in third.
Kyle Verstandig won the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:44.51 and was followed by Christian Narcelles in second place with a time of 1:44.52 and Ryan Foreback in third at 1:47.33.
In the 100 backstroke, Picozzi (52.67 seconds) and Shea Card (54.42 seconds) finished in second and third place, respectively.
Kurlich then got Denison back to its winning ways with a time of 57.49 seconds in the 100 breaststroke. Gavin Jones followed Kurlich in second with a time of 59.16 seconds.
In the 200 butterfly, Noah Houskeeper (1:55.05) was third, Bevill (1:56.41) was fourth, Oakley Lorson (1:56.42) was fifth and Eric Chimes (1:58.13) was sixth.
In the 50 freestyle, Ike finished first with a time of 20.88 seconds and was followed by Chase Fisher in second at 21.19 seconds; and then in the 100 freestyle, Ike picked up his third win of the day with a time of 46.50 seconds while being followed by Verstandig in second with a time of 47.23 seconds and Fisher in third at 47.56 seconds.
In the 200 backstroke, Picozzi (1:57.19) finished second, Conrads (1:59.51) finished third and Connor Brown (2:00.41) finished fourth.
In the 200 breaststroke, Kurlich matched Ike win three wins on the day as he finished with a time of 2:07.68 and was followed by Jones in second with a time of 2:09.07 and Narcelles in third at 2:11.37.
Myaard picked up his second win of the day with a time of 4:42.69 in the 500 freestyle; and then Kurlich was second in the 100 butterfly at 49.61 seconds.
On the 3-meter board, Liam Simmons finished in first place with a score of 267.53; and then the 1-meter dive saw Brendan Downey (259.05), Simmons (257.78) and Kristian Kowalski (248.78) finish in first, second and third place, respectively.
Denison returns to action at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 9, with the first of four days at the 2022 North Coast Athletic Conference Championship at the Trumbull Aquatics Center.

The Youngstown State women’s and men’s swimming and diving team put up a strong performance but came up short against No. 3 (women) and No. 2 (men) ranked Denison.
The women’s team fell to Denison 185-104, while the men were defeated 180-113.
Event winners for the men were Soma Albert (100 and 200 back) and Aleksa Radenovic (100 and 200 fly).
Both the men’s and women’s team placed second in the 200 medley relay. The men swam a time of 1:34.51 in the event.
Albert won the 100 back with a time of 52.63 and swam a 1:52.84 to earn a victory in the 200 back. Radenovic swam a 49.22 in the 100 fly and a 1:51.98 in the 200 fly to pick up his two victories.
Gavin Webb placed second in the 500 free with a time of 4:48.44. Karan Raju swam a 1:55.04 in the 200 fly to earn second place. Cody Thill was second in the 3m dive with a score of 254.70.
Wilson Cannon placed third in the 100 fly with a time of 50.73. Jasper Liekens swam a 1:00.66 in the 100 breaststroke to earn third place, and Rares Druga was third in the 50 free with a time of 21.41.
For the women, Tess Weiskopf won both the 1m and 3m dive with a score of 262.50 and
253.43, respectively. The women swept the 1m dive with Kayla Wrasman placing second with a score of 246.68, and Dasha Toth earning third with a score of 222.68. Wrasman also placed second in the 3m dive, scoring 245.40.
Aubrey Whitaker placed second in the 200 free with a time of 1:59.67, and Isabelle Hanson swam a 1:00.19 to earn second in the 100 back.
Olivia Wilcox swam a 2:09.89 in the 200 back to place third, and Macy Wang was third in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:09.81. Wang also swam a 2.14.60 in the 200 IM. Josie Preski earned third in the 500 free, swimming a 5:22.55. Catherine Imo was third in the 50 free with a time of 25.38.
The women swam a 3:47.19 in the 400 free relay, and the men swam a 3:10.11.
The Penguins are next in action Sunday as they travel to the Butler Invitational to compete against Butler, St. Louis, Xavier, Hillsdale, Ball State, Illinois State, Indiana State, and Bellarmine in Fishers, Ind. The meet is set to start at 12 pm.
