NEWARK, Del. – The Delaware men’s and women’s swimming teams each picked up wins against George Mason in the first home meet of the season Saturday afternoon. The men took first place in 12 events, while the women placed first in nine of 16 events each.
The men’s team won its meet over the Patriots by a 186-106 score, while the women picked up a 179-119 victory.
“Another great meet for our Blue Hen swimmers and divers. They raced their hearts out and have grown as a team so fast this season,” said head coach Pablo Marmolejo. “I’m very proud of this group and the future is very bright for this program. Our depth on the men’s side helped us a lot and experience on the women’s side. We have great meets coming up so we have to continue to work and maintain focus as we get ready for mid-season and CAA’s.”
Gavin Currie highlighted the men’s side, placing first in the 100-yard Backstroke (50.76) as well as the 200-yard Backstroke (1:51.84). Andrew Taylor finished first in two events as well, placing first in the 200-yard Freestyle with a time of 1:43.56 and the 500-yard Freestyle with a time of 4:43.22.
Miguel Vasquez, Eric Veit and Simeon Sabev also had strong days for UD. They were a part of the 200-yard Medley Relay team with Isaiah Bell that placed first with a time of 1:33.10. Additionally, Vasquez placed first in the 100-yard Freestyle (46.46), Veit placed first in the 100-yard Breaststroke (57.77) and Sabev placed first in the 200-yard Butterfly (1:51.81).
Bryce Ciecko took first in the 1000-yard Freestyle, completing the event in 9:50.83. In the 50-yard Freestyle Ryan Polino placed first with a time of 21.61, while Evan Frick had a first-place finish in the 200-yard Breaststroke with a time of 2:06.41.
Emil Vasko placed first in one-meter diving on the men’s side with a score of 213.30. Julia Servas dominated in women’s diving, placing first in both the one meter (226.13) and three meter (222.45).
On the women’s side, Mira Selling had another standout weekend, placing first in four events. She took the gold in the 200-yard Freestyle (1:54.81), 50-yard Freestyle (23.89) and the 100-yard Freestyle (51.65).
Selling was also a part of the first-place 200-Freestyle Relay team, accompanied by Nicole Chiappa, Peyton Rautzhan and Kaitlyn Sullivan, as they completed the event in 1:37.39.
In the 1000-yard Freestyle Charlise Oberholzer placed first with a time of 10:45.18. Allison Gozdan had a first-place finish in the 200-yard Butterfly (2:08.55), as well as Natalie Dobrzykowski in the 500-yard Freestyle (5:20.75).
The Blue Hens have almost a month until their next meet when they travel to Wilmington, N.C., for the POD Meet Nov. 6-7.

NEWARK, Del. – The George Mason men’s and women’s swimming and diving team dropped their first dual meet of the 2021-22 season on Saturday afternoon at the Rawstrom Natatorium in Newark, Del.
The women’s team won seven events but fell to the Blue Hens, 179-119, while the men’s team won four events and fell, 216-67.
On the women’s side, freshman Ali Tyler won her first two individual collegiate events, touching the wall first in both the 100-yard backstroke (57.62) and 100-yard butterfly (58.29). She also claimed second-place in the 100-yard freestyle (52.58).
Freshman Anna Whelan won her first two individual collegiate events, taking the top spot in both the 200-yard backstroke (2:05.47) and 200-yard IM (2:09.59). She won both events by three seconds.
Freshman Emma DeJong took the top spot on the podium in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:07.69), winning the event by less than a second. She placed fourth in the 100-yard freestyle (53.71).
Senior Jacquee Clabeaux turned in a dominate performance in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:21.36), winning the event by seven seconds. Clabeaux was second in the 50-yard freestyle (23.94), less than a second from the win.
The combination of sophomore Abigail Murtaugh, Clabeaux, DeJong and Tyler won the 200-yard medley relay (1:46.92). Senior Ana Kuzemka, junior Emily Lewantowicz, along with freshmen Shannon Judge and Calli McEvoy placed fourth in the event (1:54.52).
Murtaugh also placed second in the 200-yard butterfly (2:08.67), touching the wall less than a second behind first place.
In the 1000-yard freestyle, a trio of freshmen posted a strong showing, with Whelan second (10:49.72), Kat Diatchenko third (10:57.14) and Michaela Teachey fourth (11:01.01).
Senior Hannah Milikich placed third in both the 200-yard freestyle (1:59.22) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:08.81).
Freshman Shannon Judge placed third in the 100-yard backstroke (1:00.83).
Senior Laura Hodge was fourth in both the 200-yard freestyle (2:00.72) and 500-yard freestyle (5:33.95).
The team of Cleabeaux, Lewantowicz, DeJong, and Judge placed second in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:38.91).
On the men’s side, the Patriots took the top three spots in the 100-yard butterfly.
Sophomore Sorab Aman won the event (52.03), freshman Alexander Franklin was second (52.48) and senior Jared Bergan third (53.13).
The Patriots went 1-2-3 in the 200-yard IM, with sophomore Anthony Nguyen winning the event (1:58.16), junior Thomas Chapman second (1:59.40) and freshman Nicholas Maranto third (2:03.62).
Anthony Nguyen touched the wall second in the 200-yard freestyle (1:43.60), finishing a sprint on the last lap just four-tenths of a second from first place. He also placed third in the 100-yard freestyle (47.71).
The combination of Anthony Nguyen, senior Will Rastatter, freshman Zane Roberts and Aman won the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:26.58) by three seconds.
The team of junior Sammy Lucht, freshman Alexander Franklin, Aman and Rastatter placed third in the 200-yard medley relay (1:34.18).
In the 1000-yard freestyle, the Patriots went 3-4-5, with Chapman third (10:16.24), sophomore Graham Boyle fourth (10:24.29) and senior Timothy McKinley fifth (10:35.27).
Bergan finished third in the 200-yard butterfly (1:57.01), Lucht took third in the 100-yard breaststroke (58.97), and sophomore Dylan Nguyen placed fourth in both the 100-yard backstroke (53.31) and 200-yard backstroke (1:58.04).
Sophomore Ian Castegnaro won the three-meter diving event (222.90), with classmate Indigo Flynch third (192.90) and freshman Kevin Dinkel fifth (151.35. In the one-meter diving event, Flynch was third (193.93) and Castegnaro fifth (168.00).
The Patriots are back in action at the Richmond Duals on Oct. 22-23 in Richmond, Va.
