Dawson Leads 50 Back Euros Semi With 27.19 British Record

2021 LEN EUROPEAN AQUATICS CHAMPIONSHIPS

To say that British backstroker Kathleen Dawson has strung together an impressive set of performances in 2021 is a giant understatement, as the 23-year-old just lowered her own national record in the 50m sprint of her favorite discipline.

Competing on day 2 of this year’s European Championships, postponed from 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, Dawson clinched the top seed of the semi-final in a new lifetime best of 27.19. That not only edged out Dutch favorite and reigning European Record holder Kira Toussaint, but it sliced .10 off of Dawson’s previous lifetime best of 27.29 from just this morning.

With her 27.19 PB tonight, however, Dawson’s time overwrites the 27.21 Georgia Davies put on the British record books back in 2018, making her the 2nd fastest European performer ever.

Dawson is now the 7th swiftest performer ever in this women’s 50m backstroke event all-time.

All-Time Top Women’s LCM 50 Backstroke Performers:

  1. Xiang Liu (CHN) – 26.98
  2. Jing Zhao (CHN) – 27.06
  3. Kira Toussaint (NED) – 27.10
  4. Fu Yuanhui (CHN) – 27.11
  5. Etiene Medeiros (BRA) – 27.14
  6. Kaylee McKeown (AUS) – 27.16
  7. Kathleen Dawson (GBR) – 27.19

Dawson recently posted personal bests of 2:08.14 in the 200m back and 58.24 in the 100m back so we’ll see what she comes up with in those races as well as these Championships roll on.
