The Terre Haute Torpedoes (THT) board of directors announced today that Dave Breiding has accepted the head coaching position of the Terre Haute based swim club effective April 2017. In October, Randy Jensen announced he will step down as head coach after the winter season.
“We are amazed to get a quality coach like Dave Brieding to lead our team,” THT Board President Joel Lauritzen said. “Dave is a phenomenal coach and has been successful as a swimmer and as a coach. We know we have an elite level coach that will lead our program to much success in the future.”
Breiding has been a member of the Torpedoes staff since August 2004 and currently serves as the assistant head Age Group coach. He has 25-years of swimming and coaching experience that began as an age group swimmer in Kent, Washington, continued as a collegiate swimmer, and now as a coach whose swimmers are now competing at international and collegiate levels. Breiding was a 4-year letterman at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and held the 200 yard backstroke record for more than 15 years. Upon graduating from Rose-Hulman in 2004, Breiding worked as a biomedical engineering Engineer in Terre Haute. However in 2008, he knew his passion for swimming continued and he started coaching full time. He also obtained a math education degree from Indiana State University in 2011. In August 2014, Breiding took over the head coaching duties of the Terre Haute South Vigo High School boys and girls swim and dive programs. He is currently the 2016-17 math teacher at Dugger Union High School. Breiding is married to Alison and they have 2 children Tia and Stuart who are a part of THT.
Terre Haute Torpedoes is the premier club in Terre Haute, Indiana. THT’s current membership exceeds 260 athletes and draws swimmers from several counties in Indiana and Illinois. THT also encompasses an age group program, a children and adult’s learn-to-swim program and a master’s swim team. THT’s new home is at the Vigo County School Corporation (VCSC) Aquatic Center which opened January 2016. The aquatic center has a 10 lane, 50 meter x 25 yard pool for practice and meets, a physical therapy pool, 3 – 1 meter and 1 – 3 meter competition diving boards, locker rooms and many other amenities.
Breiding is well positioned to continue providing leadership and direction that will lead the program to do greater things in the future.
“Dave has endless potential as a coach and has had an amazing level of success,” Lauritzen said. “Dave has been a dedicated member of our coaching staff and I expect much success in the future for our club.”
