NCAA Division III program the Kenyon Lords took on the Division I Oakland Grizzlies on Saturday, January 12th, and the Grizzlies swept the D3 powerhouse at their home pool.
Women’s Meet
The Oakland women started the meet with a 200 medley relay win with a 1:44.91. However, Kenyon senior Abby Wilson had the fastest free split among all relays with a 23.34.
In the 200 free, Kenyon scored a 1-2 finish with Hannah Orbach-Mandel (1:51.81) and Kendall Vanderhoof (1:53.23).Orbach-Mandel also won the 100 free with a 52.00.
In the 100 back, Oakland also scored a 1-2 finish, led by Grace Shinske (56.30) and Susan LaGrand (56.40).
In the 100 breast, Oakland’s Sydney McDowell (1:04.86) just out-touched Kenyon’s Andrea Perttula (1:05.15) for the win. The 200 fly featured Oakland’s Mady Cislo, who took the event in a 2:07.04.
In the 50 free, Oakland’s Katie Colwell held off Kenyon’s Wilson for the win 24.01-24.19. Wilson also picked up second in the 100 free with a 52.59 behind teammate Orbach-Mandel for another Kenyon 1-2 finish.
Kenyon’s Crile Hart took the 200 back win in a 2:02.99. Oakland’s Taylor Bailey then took a comfortable win in the 200 breast with a 2:20.12.
After taking second in the 200 free, Kenyon’s Vanderhoof won the 500 free with a 5:05.41. Also picking a win after an earlier second place finish was Oakland’s LaGrand, who won the 100 fly with a 57.01.
In the 200 IM, Kenyon’s Hart took her second victory with a 2:02.99. In the final event, Kenyon took their fourth win of the meet in the 400 free relay in a 3:30.41.
In the final team scores, the Oakland Grizzlies overtook the Kenyon Lords 187-113.
Men’s Meet
After a dominant 200 medley relay win, the Grizzlies had a challenge in the 1000 free. Only 5 seconds separated the lead trio of swimmers. Oakland’s Micah DeJonge broke from the trio and won with a 9:35.37. Kenyon’s Bryan Fitzgerald (9:39.54) was able to hold off Oakland’s Benjamin Davis (9:40.53) to take second for the Lords. DeJonge also went on to win the 500 free as the lone swimmer under 4:40 with a 4:37.12.
In the 200 free, Kenyon’s Robert Williams and Oakland’s Rudy Aguilar-Fernandez had a thrilling battle in the last 50 of the race. Aguilar-Fernandez was able to hold off Williams 1:40.97 to 1:41.50.
Oakland’s Paul Huch not only won the 100 back but was the lone swimmer under 50 seconds, winning in a 49.85. Huch also took the 100 free with a 45.26.
Teammate Tony Eriksson took the 100 breast by nearly 2 seconds with a 56.66. Eriksson also won the 200 breast with a 2:07.14, sweeping both breaststroke events.
Oakland’s Colton Phelps (no relation to M. Phelps) maintained his narrow lead in the 200 fly and took the event with a 1:51.81. In a tight finish for second, Kenyon’s Jim Zimdars (1:53.11) overtook Oakland’s Danylo Hrebelnyi (1:53.40) in the last 50. C. Phelps also took the 200 IM in a comfortable 1:52.58.
Speaking of tight races, Oakland’s Mack Flowers out-touched Kenyon’s David Fitch by 0.07 seconds 21.08 to 21.15. Later on, Oakland’s William Gayne took the 200 back win in a 1:49.97, breaking the 1:50 mark.
Flowers also won the 100 fly, breaking 50 seconds with a 49.14. He was followed by teammate Huch (50.44), and Kenyon’s Fitch (50.85).
The Oakland 400 free relay came back on the last exchange with Flowers’ 45.24 split to take over the Kenyon relay 3:04.65 to 3:05.13. Oakland went on to win the meet with 202.5 points, Kenyon picked up 95.5 points.
Kenyon returns to the pool January 25th against Cincinnati while Oakland is back next week when they host IUPUI on January 18th.
Wow Kenyon men couldn’t even win one… Not great competition for Oakland.
