The 2020 Cary Sectionals continued on Saturday in North Carolina. Swimmers competed individually in the 200 fly, 50 free, 200 breast, 100 back, and 400 free. Prelims were held in short course yards, while finals were held in long course meters.
Tac Titan’s Claire Curzan posted a 22.44 to lead the 50 free heats. Curzan then swam to a best time in long course. She won the final in 25.33, knocking 2 tenths off her former best from 2018. Curzan, a 15-year-old, now ranks #13 all-time among U.S. 15-16 year olds in the event. She also won the 100 back shortly after in 1:00.73.
Teammate Charlotte Hook was within a second of her yards best in the 200 fly with a 1:54.52 in prelims. She went on to dominate the final with a 2:09.55. Later in the session, Hook made a big drop in the 400 free. She dropped nearly 7 seconds, breaking 4:20 for the first time in 4:18.41.
There were a few pro swimmers taking wins on Saturday night. NC State postgrad Jacob Molacek won the men’s 50, racing to a 23.21. Fellow Wolfpack postgrad Justin Ress, a U.S. National Teamer, raced to victory with a 53.80 in the 100 back. U.S. Olympian Micah Sumrall put up a 2:29.65 to win the 200 breast.
