Cooper Van Der Laan Drops 52.8/1:58.1 Breaststrokes At Pitt Intrasquad

The University of Pittsburgh swimming & diving teams opened their 2021-22 seasons with a Blue vs Gold intrasquad meet, dubbed the “John Hargis Invite” after head coach John Hargis, late last week.

Team Gold came out on top in the men’s, women’s and overall standings, with four of the team’s swimmers earning multiple individual victories.

Leading the charge was senior Cooper Van Der Laan, who swept the men’s 100 and 200 breaststrokes with respective times of 52.87 and 1:58.10.

Van Der Laan, an Australian native, was third in both events at last season’s ACC Championships, clocking personal best times of 51.52 and 1:52.76, respectively. He went on to become a Championship finalist in the 100 breast at NCAAs, finishing eighth in a time of 52.17.

Van Der Laan also split 23.87 on Team Gold’s 200 medley relay, less than six-tenths shy of his split at the 2021 ACCs (23.28), as he appears well on his way to a strong senior campaign.

Earning three individual wins at the meet was Team Gold’s Daisy Anderson and Wojciech Dutkowiak.

Anderson, a junior out of Kent, England, topped the women’s 100 back (56.20), 200 IM (2:03.39) and 400 IM (4:19.49), while Dutkowiak, a junior from Wroclaw, Poland, won the men’s 100 free (45.45), 200 free (1:38.57) and 500 free (4:34.35).

Other multi-event winners included Kate Fuhrmann, representing Team Blue, who claimed the women’s 50 free (23.50) and 100 free (50.51), and her teammate Marcin Goraj swept the men’s 100 (48.98) and 200 back (1:48.97).

Also doubling up for Team Gold was Ukrainian senior Serhii Ahadzhanian, who won the men’s 100 fly (48.04) and 200 IM (1:51.26).

Junior Jerry Chen also had a trio of solid runner-up finishes, clocking 53.96 in the men’s 100 breast, 1:59.00 in the 200 breast and 1:51.95 in the 200 IM.
