The Hamilton College women’s swimming and diving team captured their own invitational title on Saturday when the two-day, three-session event concluded at Hamilton’s Bristol Pool.

The Continentals edged SUNY Cortland by the slimmest of margins — one-half of one point. Hamilton finished with 669 points and Cortland had 668.5. SUNY Oneonta finished in third place just 12 points behind the Continentals. Smith College, SUNY Oswego, SUNY Potsdam, Mount Holyoke College and Buffalo State College rounded out the field.

The invitational came down to the 400-yard freestyle relay as the Continentals’ top two teams racked up 54 points and Cortland’s top two teams collected 50 points. Hamilton’s four-point advantage in the event allowed the Continentals to win the meet in dramatic fashion.

Jessie Halladay ’18, Sadie Logan ’20, Hannah Mooney’17 and Lauren Klei ’18 were the members of Hamilton’s winning 400 free relay with a time of 3:42.80. Halladay was victorious in the 1,650 free in 18:31.64 and landed in second place in the 500 free (5:22.01). Logan claimed first place in the 100 backstroke (1:01.95) and was runner-up in the 200 back (2:16.39).

Mooney posted wins in the 200 free (1:59.99) and the 500 free (5:21.78) and was second in the 100 free with a time of 56.09 seconds. Klei was right behind Mooney in third place in the 100 free (56.13). The same quartet of Halladay, Logan, Mooney and Klei grabbed first place in the 800 free relay with a time of 8:10.88.

In diving, Jackie Bussgang ’19 was Hamilton’s top finisher in seventh place in the 1-meter springboard with 191.25 points and sixth place in the 3-meter board with 185.30 points.

Madeleine Lepesant ’19 touched the wall first in the 200 butterfly (2:13.58) and ended up third in the 1,650 free (19:21.78). Renee Varga ’20 took third place in the 200 back with a time of 2:19.95.

Hamilton returns to the pool on Monday, Jan. 2 for a dual meet at Wesleyan University that is scheduled to start at 3 p.m.
