Conor Dwyer led the race start-to-finish in the men’s 200m freestyle this afternoon, taking down two 200m freestyle world champions en route to a new US Open record.
Dwyer started things up with an early lead, just turning ahead of both Ryan Lochte and Britain’s James Guy at the first 50. At the 100 meter mark, Dwyer only extended his lead to about four-tenths of a second ahead of Guy as he threw down the fastest second 50 of the entire field with a 25.94.
Lochte began to close the gap a little bit on the third 50 with his unorthodox underwater technique, but Dwyer still held on to the lead with only 50 meters remaining.
With just 50 meters to go and Dwyer began to push even farther forward past Lochte and Guy. With the fastest last 50 split of the entire field, Dwyer managed to touch the wall first in a new US Open record time of 1:42.10.
Lochte ended up finishing second behind him in 1:42.53 with Guy picking up the bronze medal in 1:42.93.
The time for Dwyer ranks him as the third fastest 200m freestyler this season globally. Only Australian freestyler Cameron McEvoy and another Aussie, Thomas Fraser-Holmes, have been faster than Dwyer this season.
