Connecticut’s Kaitlyn Joy Verbally Commits to George Mason

Kaitlyn Joy from Milford, Connecticut has verbally committed to the George Mason Patriots, she tells SwimSwam this week.

“I chose George Mason because I love the D.C. area but did not want to be right in the city and being 20 minutes away was perfect,” Joy said of her decision. “I wanted to go to a big school with excellent academics and a great swim team. When I went on my recruiting trip I fell in love with the feel of the campus and everyone on the swim team. I really think George Mason will help me reach my potential as a swimmer and academically.”

Joy holds the Lauralton Hall Catholic School records in the 50 and 100 yard freestyles, and those are her best events.

Best times in yards:

  • 50 free – 24.21
  • 100 free – 52.99
  • 200 free – 1:55.35
  • 50 back – 27.55
  • 100 back – 58.99
  • 200 back 2:08.02

She was the runner-up at the Connecticut Class M State Championship meet, and qualified for the State Open Championship meet as well.

As a junior, Joy’s improvements came mostly in the shortest versions of each of the above events. Of the 6 races, listed, the 50 free and 50 back came during the 2014-2015 season.

Even that small improvement in the 50, however, puts her into instant-impact range for George Mason as a freshman. The time would’ve ranked her 4th among the team’s flat-start swimmers last season.

Joy swims for the Westport/Weston Y Water Rats and was named a New Haven Register All-Star and Connecticut Post All-Star swimmer.
