Connecticut Butterflier Lindsay Smalec Verbally Commits to Bucknell

Cheshire High School senior Lindsay Smalec has made a verbal commitment to join the Bucknell University women’s swimming and diving team in the fall of 2015.

“I chose Bucknell because the second I stepped onto campus I felt incredibly welcomed by everyone I came in contact with. The campus along with the athletic facilities were great and definitely a place where I could see myself prosper both in the pool and in the classroom.”

Smalec took seventh in the 200 IM and was runner-up in the 100 fly at the 2013 Connecticut Interscholastic Open Girls State Meet. She also propelled the Cheshire 200 medley and 400 free relays to fourth-place finishes with her fly and leadoff legs, respectively. Smalec’s top times over the last two seasons are:

100y fly: 56.53
200y fly: 2:05.46
200y back: 2:06.28
200y breast: 2:27.19
200y IM: 2:07.85
400y IM: 4:33.47

Smalec also swims with the Cheshire Y/Sea Dog Swim Club and has had very successful National YMCA meets at the end of the most recent short course and long course seasons. In April at the National YMCA Short Course Championships, Smalec finaled in the 200 fly, and picked up best times in the 200 back, 100/200 fly, and 200/400 IM. In the long course version of the meet, she improved her times in the 100/200 fly and 200/400 IM.

Smalec should be able to fill in where the Bison need her most, since there are so many things she does well. At 2014 Patriot League Championships, Bucknell put 4 swimmers in the A-final of the 200 IM but had no one in the A-finals of the 100 fly, for example. Smalec’s 56-mid would have made quite a difference for the Bison. She would have made B-finals in the 200 fly, too.

Bucknell has done some excellent recruiting these last several years. Smalec will join a training group that should help her become one of the Bison’s next big point-scorers.
