Columbia Adds IM/Butterflier Shane Brett from Japan to Class of 2019

Shane Brett, a senior at St. Mary’s International School in Tokyo, Japan, has been accepted in the early round to Columbia University and will swim for the Lions beginning in the fall of 2015.

“Not only does Columbia offer unparalleled opportunity to pursue my academic and swimming aspirations, but it also gives me the chance to work with some of the greatest, most down to earth coaches and most of all a very friendly, yet competitive team. I couldn’t be more excited to be a Columbia Lion for the next four years!!

Born in Japan to an Irish father and a Japanese mother, Brett has lived in Japan his entire life – with the exception of 2 years in Ireland. At St. Mary’s International School, Brett trains with top-level swimmers such as Michigan-commit Mokhtar Al-Yamani. “Former graduates of my school include the Ortiz Brothers, Miguel Molina (former Olympian) and various other D1 athletes.”

Brett was a two-sport athlete until 9th grade, when he gave up soccer to fully commit to swimming. His top events are IM and fly, and his best short-course meters times (with SCY conversion times in parentheses) are:

  • 200 IM – 2:02.91 (1:50.63)
  • 400 IM – 4:23.25 (3:56.95)
  • 100 fly – 54.45 (48.88)
  • 200 fly – 2:01.34 (1:48.93)
  • 200 free – 1:52.01 (1:41.13)

If Brett takes to the short-course yards format as expected, he’ll be a great addition to Head Coach Jim Bolster’s squad. Both his fly conversion times, as well as his 400 IM, would all have scored squarely in the B-finals at 2014 Ivy League Championships.

Are his times LCM or SCM? Because a 4:23 LCM 400IM is way harder and faster than a 3:56 SCY 400IM. I would say a 4:23 at least gets him a 3:50. But that’s just my opinion.
