Colorado 5A State Runner-Up Meredith Smithbaker Commits to SDSU (2021)

Fitter and Faster Swim Clinics is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Meredith Smithbaker has verbally committed to swim for San Diego State University beginning in the fall of 2021. The Rocky Mountain High School junior shared the following about her commitment: “I am so proud to announce my verbal commitment to attend San Diego State University!  I am very thankful for the opportunity to continue my academic and athletic career as part of the Aztec family.  Coach Shrader, Coach Allnutt and the rest of the team made this an easy decision! Thank you also to my family, friends and coaches who have supported me along the way.  GO AZTECS!

Smithbaker was the runner-up in the 50 free at the 2019 CHSAA 5A Girls State Championships. After her prelims swim, she was seeded second behind Heritage High School’s Anna Shaw. Shaw qualified for finals in 23.32, Smithbaker was at 23.37, and Lewis-Palmer High School’s Meredith Rees followed closely at 23.62. During finals, Smithbaker remained second, lowering her time to 23.21, out-touching Shaw by 0.01 seconds, and finishing only 0.05 seconds behind Rees. Smithbaker also got 9th in the 100 breast (1:04.91), and swam the anchor legs on Rocky Mountain High School’s 200 medley and free relays. She closed out the medley relay with a split of 22.87. Smithbaker now has two USA Swimming Scholastic All-America honors for her high school season performances.

Smithbaker most recently competed at the Speedo Junior National Championships with her club tea, Team Vortex. The sprinter swam the 100m free, the 100m breast, and had three opportunities to swim the 50m free. She tied with Amy Feddersen for 16th place in prelims, with both women going 26.40. Smithbaker won the swim-off with a time of 26.31, placing her in the B-final for the event. She shattered her prelims times, moving from 16th to 9th, with a final time of 26.19.

Top SCY Times:

  • 100 breast – 1:03.79
  • 50 free – 23.21
  • 100 free – 50.63
  • 200 free – 1:51.77

When she joins the Aztecs in the fall of 2021, Smithbaker will be contributing to an already strong sprint program.
