Coleman Allen of the UBC Thunderbirds broke the 50m fly CIS Championship record at the start of prelims, and downed the 200m fly CIS Championships record in the last event of the preliminary heats.
Not only did he break the record, but he broke the record held by the most decorated CIS swimmer of all time: Brian Johns. Johns, who represented UBC and is now an assistant coach there, swam a 1:54.76 back in 2003 to set the record which has now stood for 12 years.
Allen just nipped the record with a time of 1:54.56 to take exactly two tenths off it. With that time he is now the CIS record holder in all three butterfly events.
Allen was a 51.19 on day one to break the 100m fly mark and a 23.31, which also doubled as a Canadian record, to break the 50m fly mark this morning.
He’s heading into finals as the top seed now in both the 50 and 100m fly, and is looking to complete the butterfly sweep during finals here on day two.
