Professional breaststroker Cody Miller has broken the American and U.S. Open Records in the 50 yard breaststroke on Sunday at the American Energy Swim Club Pro-Am meet in Edmond, Oklahoma.
In the race, Miller swam a 23.61, which improved the 24.31 done by Mark Gangloff at this same meet in 2007 when it was at the Oklahoma City Community College (where the King Marlin version is now held).
Also going under the old record was runner-up Brendan McHugh in 23.66, 3rd-place finisher Jared Anderson in 24.23, and 4th-place finisher Zach Hayden in 24.23.
Miller actually broke the record once already in prelims with a 23.91, and took it further in finals.
Note: USA Swimming doesn’t have a published U.S. Open Record in this event, and their American Record history is thin, but two swimmers have been faster in the first 50 of a 100 yard swim: Kevin Cordes was 23.58 en route to his record in the 100, and Damir Dugonjic was 23.45 on the first 100 en route to an NCAA title in 2009. We have reached out to USA Swimming to see why Cordes’ swim isn’t counted as the American Record.
For the sake of curiosity, the fastest split on a relay we could find was Damir Dugonjic, who has split as fast as 22.83. Last December, Kevin Cordes was a 22.84 on a 200 medley relay for Arizona.
Is there any footage of this race somewhere?
Cordes was 23.5 in the opening split of his 100 at NCAA’s last year…still a really fast swim though
This was a great swim by Miller, but I can’t really view this is the “American Record” due to the fact that there have already been a few swims done by both Damir Dugonjic who split a 23.45 in his 50 split in the 100 breast at NCAA’s in 2009. But you can also keep in mind that this was during the full bodysuit era.
Looking at the present day textile era we can use Kevin Cordes, who at NCAA’s earlier this year split a 23.58 in his first 50 breast split in the record breaking 100 breast.
I have much respect for Cody Millers performance in that race, but I view his 100 breast to be the real eye… Read more »
Interesting finds…going to reach out to USA Swimming to see why they didn’t recongize the splits.
USA Swimming just started recognizing 50 yard races as “American Records” and actually has done a pretty half-hearted job of maintaining them. They don’t seem to count 50 splits of 100 breast or fly. They irregularly count relay lead-offs. They don’t recognize the 100 y IM at all yet.
Here’s my list:

Dugonjic has both:
22.83 relay, 23.45 flat. Both in 2009.
Cordes split 22.84 relay last December…
Damir Dugonjic, I believe, actually has the fastest 50 (realizing he is not american). Opening split to his 50.8 at NCAAs was a 23.45. Kevin Cordes was 23.58 en route to his 50.04. Relay-wise Damir was 22.83 at Pac 10s.
Relay split: Damir Dugonjic 2009: 22.96.
Flat start (opening 50 of 100): Kevin Cordes 2014: 23.58; Damir Dugonjic 2009: 23.45.
I know there are more 22 splits from Dugonjic at least from maybe a pac 12 meet or something, and I thought Cordes had split a 22 at one point as well. Either way, Dugonjic should have the US Open Record with his 23.45, and Cordes should have the American Record with his 23.58.
If I’m not mistaken, Damir split a 22 on cals 200 medlay relay in 2011 NCAAs
He was 23.08 in finals and 23.25 in prelims.
In 2010, he was 23.10/23.63.
Looks like we just didn’t go back far enough though – he was 22.96 in 2009.
