Clovis PSS Psych Sheets Reveal A Quiet Showing

2019 Clovis Pro Swim Series

Psych sheets for the final stop of the Pro Swim Series have been released. This final stop will take place in Clovis, CA, in lieu of Santa Clara from previous years.

This final stop will be more quiet than the others, as many big names are at the Santa Clara International meet that is June 6-9. Counting the numbers, 26 of the 35 events have less than 32 swimmers entered, leaving empty D-finals in 9 of the events excluding distance events and potential scratches.

In the women’s 800 and 1500 free, less than 12 swimmers are entered. The men’s 800 free has 13 swimmers entered as well. As you may have guessed, the 50/100/200 free events all have more than 32 swimmers.

Appearing on the psych sheet are national teamers Leah Smith, Erica Sullivan, Mallory Comerford, Kelsi Dahlia, Townley Haas,  Daniel Roy, Trey FreemanJustin Ress, Tate Jackson, Michael Chadwick, Justin Wright, Evie Pfeifer, and Kendyl Stewart. Along with them, NCAA swimmers Catie DeLoof, Ali DeLoof, Amy Bilquist, and Louise Hansson are also scheduled to compete.

Age group phenoms Claire Tuggle and Isabelle Stadden are on the psyches while top 200 flyer 17-year-old Luca Urlando will look to make a statement in Clovis.

Notably on the pysch sheet is Matt Grevers, who came off of a great last FINA Champions Swim Series performance that featured a win in the 50 back. Former national teamer Giles Smith joins Grevers on the pysch sheets as well.

Among the international names, South African Ryan Coetzee, Canadian Sydney Pickrem, and Jamaican Alia Atkinson are scheduled for swims. At the Indy stop of the Champions series, Pickrem swam a new Canadian record in the 200 IM.

It was probably a good idea for USA swimming to change up the locations of the Pro Series Meets but bidding on locations is a mixed bag considering smaller cities aren’t as accessible for athletes- especially international ones (not being able to rent a car, etc.) The new locations haven’t seemed to be much of a problem until this stop.
Sorry if this is a dumb question, but why is the Fresno airport so much more expansive to fly into than SF, LA, etc?

Claire Tuggle gets the program any iron ladies will be jealous of.
200FR – 400FR – 800FR – 200IM – 400IM
I wouldn’t call it other than heavy training and we won’t see most likely new personal bests from her. So we have to wait for her major international meets this season to check on her progress since spectacular for 13 yo previous season. My personal interest in her progress is if she makes substantial step forward in 200FR to be a serious help to American 800 relay in Tokyo. Last season she was 1:58.58.

You’re completely right about that one, the difference that comfort makes. Not to mention it’s a pool she is more than familiar with.

The facilities are amazing, youre right about that, and the closest reasonable airport is a few hours out, but not a decent hotel within 100 miles? There are dozens within 5, all very normal and without issue.

Didn’t realize the Fresno International airport wasn’t considered reasonable. It’s 30 minutes from the pool.

the facilities are beyond respectable and they have fine hotels in Clovis. They host plenty of large senior travel meets and I’ve never heard people complaining about hotels.

Agree that the weather is an issue and it just isn’t a desireable summer travel destination for people flying from all sides of ten country, it’s in the middle of nowhere.

Hosting the meet at the Clovis West site may have improved turn-up. A historic pool, and the best in the area, has a lot of familiarity with high end high school athletes thanks to CIF championships, along with being closer to mid-level hotels in the area. The meet is an example of why TYR should strike an airline deal to make travel cheaper for national athletes, or at least those who swim for TYR sponsored teams.

As predicted: no way Santa Clara wasn’t going to have their meet, which is only 12 minutes from the airport. Despite the relaxed cuts, it seems SoCal swimmers still don’t want to drive up to Fresno :^(

SoCal already has grand challenge, smoc and LAI so they don’t need another sr level meet unless they want to go bake in Fresno.

Taking away meets from major cities has been a factor certainly in attendance. If it was in Santa Clara would it be more full?

It’s almost like now is when getting in the yardage before the upcoming taper is most important, glad everyone is back underground training, eating, and sleeping

Except that this is the same weekend that has always been the Santa Clara International/Grand Prix/Pro Swim Series Meet. A meet that has seen world and national records broken, break out stars emerge, and a national and international destination meet for many of the top teams and individuals.

The problem? USA Swimming’s poor idea to make teams bid on the Pro Series rather than hold the meets in locations full of history and ease of access. The nearest airport to Clovis? Fresno! A location that cost 3-5x as much to fly in and out of as San Francisco, Oakland, Sacramento, LA, Orange County, Long Beach etc.

Or with the fewer entries ever, like Womens 1500 free. But there will be Luca Urlando in a lot of events and, after his huge Mel Zajac, who’s not interested to see his level of performances?
