Claire Grover Posts 22.62 50 FR as UCLA Rolls Past Arizona 177-123 in Pac-12 Dual

UCLA hosted Arizona for a women’s dual meet yesterday, posting a decisive 177-123 victory at Spieker Aquatics Center.

Katrina Bellio is paying early dividends for UCLA, picking up a pair of victories on the day. The Canadian distance star kicked things off with a 10:03.46 in the 1000 free, posting a dominant win. Bellio touched 21 seconds ahead of the runner-up, teammate Beril Bocekler.

Bellio then went on to win the 500 free decisively, swimming a 4:52.31. It was Bocekler again taking second, swimming a 5:02.42.

Ana Jih-Schiff was another star for the Bruins, sweeping the breaststroke events. In the 100 breast, Jih-Schiff swam a 1:02.29, narrowly beating out Arizona’s Kennedy Fischer (1:02.40). Fischer got out to a slight early lead, splitting 29.32 on the first 50, while Jih-Schiff split 29.51. UCLA’s Eva Carlson finished in a close third, swimming a 1:02.73.

Claire Grover had a great swim in the 50 free, speeding to a 22.62. She blew out the field, touching first by 0.65 seconds.

UCLA had a solid 1-2 punch in the 200 free, with Rachel Rhee swimming a 1:50.06 for first and Brooke Schaffer 1:50.79 for second.

Maddy Burt was on fire for the Wildcats, winning a pair of individual events. Burt first took the 100 free, swimming a 50.56. It was a stunningly tight race, as Burt and Rhee were tied at the 50 mark, both splitting 24.55. Burt then came home just slightly faster than Rhee, splitting 26.01 on the second 50 to Rhee’s 26.04. That led to Burt getting her hand on the wall at the finish 0.03 seconds ahead of Rhee. Grover was right there as well, claiming the early lead with a speedy 24.17 on the first 50. She was slower coming home, ending up third with a 50.77.

Burt would then go on to win the 100 fly in 53.69.

Junior Julia Heimstead continues to be one of the best 200 butterfliers in the Pac-12, claiming victory in the event for Arizona. Heimstead swam a 1:58.10, establishing a huge early lead and holding on to get the win.

Delaney Schnell was, as always, a bright spot for Arizona. Schnell won 1-meter diving with a score of 314.93, posting the top score in the field by nearly 35 points. She then racked up 370.95 points in 3-meter, leading the event by a whopping 40 points.

UCLA freshman Rosie Murphy had a good race in the 200 back, posting a 1:58.46. She got out to the lead right from the start, clocking the fastest split in the field on each of the first three 50s.
