But not the one you are probably thinking.
Chapel Hill High School senior Claire DeSelm, whose father, Rich DeSelm, is head men’s and women’s swimming and diving coach at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, has chosen to make South Bend, Indiana her home for the next four years.
“I am incredibly excited to join the team at the University of Notre Dame! I cannot wait to be able to study at this diverse institution and swim under Coach Litzinger and Coach Woo alongside the motivated and inspiring team at Notre Dame. I am so excited to learn and grow and do my best to contribute to the swim program and the school. Go Irish!”
DeSelm is a five-time North Carolina high school state champion. At the 2016 3A State NCHSAA Championships, she won the 100 fly and placed fourth in the 200 IM. In 2015 and 2014 she won both events. DeSelm also swims for North Carolina Aquatic Club. Her top SCY times are:
100 back – 56.37
100 fly – 54.77
200 fly – 2:00.08
200 IM – 2:02.59
400 IM – 4:23.64
All her best times would have ranked in the Irish top 5 for the 2015-16 season. Furthermore, her 200 fly would have made the B final at 2016 ACC Championship while her 100 fly would have landed her in the C final. DeSelm is part of a deep class of 2020 that also includes: Abbie Dolan, Carolyn Kammeyer, Claire Andrews, Erin Sheehan, Katie Rentz, Katie Smith, Kelly Jacob, Lauren Heller, and Reilly Lanigan.
DeSelm told SwimSwam, “I have known Coach Mike since he came to UNC. I am so excited to be able to swim under a coach I already trust and one that has proven to be an exceptional 200 fly coach.”

Yes go Claire! Such a sweet girl and so hard working!
Wow! I definitely feel old. Claire and her brother were just babies practically when I swam for her dad at Davidson College! Rich is an awesome coach and has done great things at UNC! Good luck Claire at Notre Dame!
