TAC Titans swimmerΒ Claire Curzan is now 2-for-2 in individual swims and NAG records at this meet. After taking down Gretchen Walsh‘s 50 free NAG record in the 15-16 age group last night with a 21.77, she returned tonight to dominate the 100 fly with a 50.87. Her time erases Beata Nelson‘s NAG of 51.08, done in 2014.
While it’s a 15-16 NAG record, this isn’t the fastest Curzan’s ever been. Her best time is a 50.64, done this past March before she turned 15, and that time stands as the 13-14 NAG record. This is her second time under 51 seconds, and other than these two performances, she’s only ever been 51.60. Meanwhile, Curzan is the only 15-16 swimmer in history to have broken 51 seconds.
Curzan is now the SCY age group record-holder in (or as part of):
- 11-12 50 fly
- 11-12 100 fly
- 13-14 50 free
- 13-14 100 free
- 13-14 100 fly
- 13-14 200 free relay
- 13-14 200 medley relay
- 15-16 100 fly
- 15-16 50 free
Though she has over a year in the age group, her best time (from age 14) would rank fourth on the 17-18 historical rankings. Her time tonight would be fifth. Only Curzan (as a 13-14 age grouper and a 15-16 age grouper), along with Olivia BrayΒ (50.19),Β Kate DouglassΒ (50.30),Β Regan Smith (50.45), andΒ Isabel Ivey (50.82) have broken 51 seconds when it comes to American 18 & unders. Douglass and Ivey hadn’t broken 51 until college, though.
Curzan’s swim tonight also destroys Regan Smith’s meet record of 51.73 from 2016.

If Regan Smith is so good in two strokes then why she still isn’t in IM business?
3 actually, but there is this annoying thing called breaststroke that you have to spend more time doing in an IM than any other stroke:(
In short pool where underwater “stroke” is about 50% of the race that doesn’t really matter. Sjostrom was easily beating Hosszu in 100IM and Ledecky is #2 all time in 400IM SCY.
Hosszu has the world record in the 100 IM so how was Sjostrom easily beating her in that event?
She just did it at World Cup last year. And since it is just 100m distance then she probably didn’t get tired. So it wasn’t hard. Meaning it was easy. Means she did it easily π π
Good grief Yozhik. Winning once at a World Cup doesnβt mean Sjostrom easily beats Hosszu ππ
I got it. So it was hard. And no matter how hard Hosszu tried to not lose she lost. You see no word “easy” was used. English is very interesting language. This way or another but the sense is the same. Like a magic trick.
π
BTW this lost cost Hosszu $50,000. So there was no joke about it.
She’ll be an exceptional 200im swimmer for Stanford. She’s was 1:56.xx at 14. Hasn’t swam it tapered since then. She’s easily a 1:53 now and probably faster. It’s just not been an event that fits her schedule on the rare occasions she swims short course. That’ll change next year I’d think.
Torii Huske just went 50.49 at NCAP invite, just turning 17
