Claire Curzan, 14, Wipes Out Missy Franklin 100 FR NAG Record – 47.67

2019 SPEEDO SECTIONALS – CARY, NC

  • March 7-10, 2019
  • Triangle Aquatic Center, Raleigh, NC
  • SCY Format
  • Live Results

Fourteen-year-old Claire Curzan has broken her second national age group record of the week at Cary Sectionals, and this one’s a particular doozy: she went 47.67 to take down Missy Franklin‘s previous 13-14 record of 47.94, which stood since 2010.

Curzan, representing the TAC Titans, split 22.86/24.81 en route to her win. She beat second-place finisher Brooke Zettel, 15, by a full three seconds. Curzan’s best time before the meet began was 49.09, but she went 48.77 leading off the 400 free relay Thursday, making Sunday’s performance a 1.1-second drop.

Earlier in the meet, Curzan re-broke her own 100 fly NAG record, going 50.64. Saturday, she went 22.01 in the 50 freestyle to become the No. 3 16-and-under performer of all time, just .01 off Gretchen Walsh‘s 13-14 NAG.

Curzan is just the second 13-14-year old in history to go under 48 seconds. She is now also the second-fastest 16&U performer of all time, ahead of Simone Manuel‘s47.73 from 2013.

She ( claire curzan) does not seem tall which might be a problem in long course meters sprinting but then there are outliers.

How tall is Reagan smith?

Regan Smith was listed at 5ft 7 1/2in on USA Swimming’s 2018 Pan Pacs media guide.

TAC titans poached another stud from surrounding clubs

That’s the thing about TAC. They’ve got such a talented group of swimmers and one of the best facilities in the area. They won this meet by a wide margin, and Hook & Curzan posted some eye-popping times for girls of any age, not just for age-groupers. And yet, the team doesn’t have a lot of love or respect from other teams in the area, as they are seen as “poachers” of strong swimmers from other clubs in the area.

I am not taking anything away from Claire or from their coaching staff. She was already setting 11-12 NAGs while she was on Raleigh Swimming Association, and has only continued that success and then some with TAC. I do find… Read more »

Is Regan Smith tall? It’s hard to tell when you watch her on TV. Her times are mind boggling too. Aye carumba!

This young lady’s times are astounding. How tall is she and what might she weigh? She just keeps getting faster and faster. If she swam when I was in high school, her times would have been faster than about 98% of the HS All_Americans. Good grief!

Oh calm down. No harm was meant by the question. Take two aspirin and call your doctor. Sheesh……

Both Curzan and Smith aren’t the tallest on deck, that’s for sure. I would estimate about 5’8” for the pair of them. They’re just so incredible underwater, though, I mean they’re bodylengths ahead of the field after just one wall.

What a beautiful age. You are doing all these boring practices in the early morning and after school. Day by day. And suddenly at the low key dual meet from nowhere you are discovering that you are 2 sec better at 100.
For those who are not a NAG record holder read a wonderful story about Ugly Duckling: there is no Simone Manuel’s name in the list of best performing 13-14 years old girls.

Simone was a 22.7/49.0/1:47 at 14yrs old, so not sure this applies

Simone isn’t an ugly duckling. At the time she was one of the best young sprinters ever. The sport has just advanced.
