2016 Olympic bronze medalist Anton Chupkov had the 3rd slowest opening 100 of all semi-finalists in the men’s 200 breast, but came home unbelievably. Chupkov closed in 1:04.3, including a 31.87 final 50, to win the second semi-final in a time of 2:07.14.
That swim breaks Daniel Gyurta‘s European and championship records (from 2013) of 2:07.23, lowers his own Russian record of 2:07.46, and moves him into #3 on the all-time top performers and performances list. Previous to tonight, he wasn’t even a top-ten all-time performer, which speaks to how many men have been in the 2:07-range over the years.
Following Chupkov in qualifying was world record holder Ippei Watanabe (2:07.44), Great Britain’s Ross Murdoch (2:07.72) and Watanabe’s Japanese countryman Yasuhiro Koseki (2:07.80).
Chupkov is now the favorite for gold tomorrow night, and will look for his first World Championship medal.

His last 50 was 31.8 ?
Really interesting that only two swimmers have multiple times in the top 10, despite many of them having plenty of swims in the 2:07 region. 200 breaststroke is definitely the event with the most people nipping at the world record.
Also a bigger gap between 1 and 2 than 2 and 10
