China Ready To Take On World Cup Stop #2 In Jinan Starting Thursday

Stop #2 of the 1st cluster of the 2019 FINA World Cup is set to get underway in China this week, with some of the world’s best aquatic athletes descending upon the Natatorium of the Jinan Olympic Sports Centre Thursday, August 8th through Sunday, August 10th. The 1st stop took place in Tokyo, Japan, while the 3rd and final stop of the 1st leg of these World Cup Series is slated for Singapore August 15th-17th.

Swimmers are competing for prize money, which is tallied at each stop, across each cluster, as well as over the entire World Cup circuit. Last year saw Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom and Russia’s Vladimir Morozov claim the overall cup wins. You can refresh yourself on 2018’s final point standings here.

For the 2019 season, for each individual event, the prize money shall be distributed as follows:
– First place: US$ 1,500
– Second place: US$ 1,000
– Third place: US$ 500
– Fourth place: US$ 400
– Fifth place: US$ 300
– Sixth place: US$ 200

The competition in Tokyo saw an incredible 11 World Cup Records bite the dust and, with the field from that city remaining mostly intact for Jinan, we may see more records yet fall before this weekend’s action concludes.

The Aussies’ roster will see Holly Barratt, Cate Campbell, Thomas Fraser-Holmes, Maddy Gough, Mitch Larkin and Emily Seebohm among those continuing on to China, while Italy’s Santo Condorelli and Nicolo Martingenghi will be carrying on their competitive tour as well.

For the Americans, the roster of Michael Andrew, Erica Sullivan, Blake Pieroni, Brennan Gravley and Andrew Wilson remains in tact, while South Africa’s Tatjana Schoenmaker has departed, leaving Roland Schoeman as the sole representation from the nation.

China is representing big-time at their home nation’s World Cup, with Ji Xinjie, Xu Jiayu, Li Zhuhao, Yan Zibei, Zhu Menghui and Qin Haiyang among those set to take titles on their home turf.

One nation entirely missing is Japan, with Daiya Seto, Yui Ohashi and Kosuke Hagino opting out of travelling for stop #2. Hagino, who had been out of the pool for a few months to address mental health issues, made his return in Toyko with a 200 IM bronze.
