Florida’s high school swimming post-season continues, with the state’s bigger schools in classes 3A and 4A holding region meets over the weekend. Regions are the last major meet before the state championships.
Here’s a rapid-fire look at what happened in class 3A:
Chiles, Creekside Swap Titles in Region 1
The defending class 3A champs were both knocked off in region 1 – by each other.
That’s because the boys of Creekside, defending state 3A boys champs, fell to Chiles, while the Chiles girls, state champs in 2014, finished 5th behind the Creekside girls.
The Creekside girls won only two events, both 200-yard relays. Kate Revels swam on both, swimming breast on the 200 medley and taking the second leg on the 200 free relay. The medley went 1:48.12 on a big 27.26 leadoff split from Abigail Ellis, a field-best 25.44 fly from Aubrey Miller and a 30.51 out of Revels on breaststroke. The free relay, meanwhile, was 1:39.71, getting a 24.69 anchor leg from Anna Gapinski and a 24.70 leadoff from Eleanor Pollitt.
The Chiles boys nipped Creekside by just 16.5 points, winning four events. John Yambor-Maul popped a 4:37.92 to take the 500 free and Ryland Sun took the 100 back in 51.93. On the diving boards, Chase Lane picked up the 1-meter title with 556.40 points, and Chiles won the 200 medley relay in 1:37.49, getting field-best splits of 27.14 on breast from Wyatt Foote and 22.48 from Sun on fly.
Viera Nips Lake Minneola by 1.5 Points In Region 2
Very tight finishes in region 3 saw the Viera girls nip Lake Minneola by just 1.5 points. the Lake Minneola boys got revenge, though, winning their meet by 7.5 over New Smyrna Beach.
The only event Viera won on the way to its team title was 1-meter diving, where Sarah Rousseau scored 488.30 points. Viera pulled out 4th-place finishes in the both free relays and rode to the title on depth.
Lake Minneola had a similar run to the top, winning just two events. Senior Timmy Crowley took the 200 IM in 1:58.56, blowing out the field for his team’s only individual win. He also went 48.97 anchoring the 400 free relay that won for Lake Minneola, icing their team championships.
Seabreeze’s Viktor Toth was the biggest mover and shaker individually. He went 21.07 to win the 50 free and hit an All-America consideration time of 45.62 to win the 100 free.
Brent-Hauser Distance Clashes Highlight Region 3
Fort Myers senior Kendall Brent was the star of region 3, blasting two huge automatic All-America swims with some tight competition.
Brent won the 200 free in 1:48.74, besting Estero senior Kaitlyn Hauser‘s 1:49.14. The two would clash again in the 500, with Brent winning 4:47.50 to 4:55.54.
Hauser’s efforts didn’t go without accolades, though. She hit two All-America consideration times, and helped lead her Estero team to the girls title. Hauser swam on a pair of relays, leading off the winning 200 medley right before that individual 200 free, then anchoring the winning 400 free relay in 51.60, among the top splits in the entire meet.
The 500 free was a great race on the boys side as well, with Sickles seniors Ludovico and Nazareno Boscaino going 1-2. Ludovico was 4:30.83 and Nazareno 4:33.07 as both boys earned All-America consideration honors.
Venice won the boys meet, getting a 100 back title from Jackson DeFore in a consideration time of 50.57. DeFore also won the 50 free in 21.15 and anchored the winning 200 medley relay with a 20.44.
Second in that 100 back was Charlotte senior Hans Schroeder, who hit a consideration time of 50.64. Schroeder also went 1:40.87 to win the 200 free.
Fort Lauderdale Sprints to Region 4 Titles
Fort Lauderdale won boys and girls titles in region 4, thanks in large part to sprinters Philippe and Raphael Marcoux.
The Marcoux’s combined for four wins and 1-2 finishes in both the 50 and 100 frees. Senior Raphael went 21.10 to win the 50, with junior Philippe’s 21.25 just behind. They repeated that finish in the 100, with Raphael going 46.12 and Philippe 46.48.
The duo combined with 100 back champ Tyler Zuyus (52.62) to win the 200 free relay (1:26.78) and 400 free relay (3:10.23).
the only All-America times of the meet came in the 100 breast. Mater junior Julio Horrego won that evnet with a 57.17, and Jensen Beach’s Al Madden also hit a consideration time with his second-place 57.41.
On the girls side, Fatimah Westbrook went 4-for-4 to help Fort Lauderdale win the trophy. The senior took the 50 free (24.41) and 100 breast (1:07.50), while swimming legs of the winning 200 medley relay (29.74 on breaststroke as the team went 1:53.11) and 200 free relay (24.41 anchor leg as the team went 1:43.01).
Leading off that 200 free relay in 25.66 was junior Morgan Meadows, who won the 200 free individually with a 1:57.53.
