Chase Kalisz comes away from Rio with Olympic hardware, but it has not gone to his head. He’s sounds very sober about the fact that his last college season was lacking. Chase is happy to be back with his dawgs in Athens. Training in Arizona, focused only on the Olympics, was a little lonely. College life at the University of Georgia is the right balance for him, and he’s optimistic about his season so far.
At the 2016 Georgia Invite he took down a stacked field in the 200 IM, and he split a smokin’ 51.7 100 breast on the 4×100 medley relay. The breast-split surprised him. “I didn’t think I was capable of swimming that fast,” he said, “especially this early in the season.”
The big takeaway? Chase is pumped about his 4:06 400IM in Rio. He did it under pressure and on the biggest stage in sport. Sure, it’s been a year since he trained and raced short course, but that great time and enduring the pressure fortifies his confidence heading into the 2017 NCAA DI Championships this spring.

What are Kalisz’s breastroke times in Long Course?
“I think times…they tell the truth.” Profound statement Mr. Kalisz!
The 200 IM is pretty open right now, I think Chase picks it up for long course. 200 breast and 200 fly are possibilities as well, but not quite as open in LCM. Murphy could also pick up 200 IM long course. USA needs people who can go 1:56 or so, with Phelps retired and Lochte questionable. David Nolan hasn’t made it clear whether he will continue swimming, that I’m aware of.
I think Lochte has a 1:55 in him. Come on, he had a groin injury. He paced that 200 IM final in Rio too fast in the first 100. He has gone 1:56.2 twice in 2016 with a groin injury, he is still in the game He would totally have won silver if he paced it like he did the night before. I say he can still make the international meets in this event and even get on the podium. Thiago also paced that race very stupidly.
Chase proves the rule of the individual medley that breaststroke is where you can make up the most time.
In the breast leg, he looks like he’s swimming downhill.
The backstroke seems to the weak stroke for him.
Nice piece Melvin. Chase has become quite poised and articulate.
Speaking of IMers, anyone know what David Nolan’s plans are or where he’s training?
Nolan was 3rd at US Trials in the 200 IM. The two swimmers who finished ahead of him in that event are not in the picture for 2017.
Thx.
Where’s Nolan? Don’t know. I remember him saying he’s was training though OTs, then deciding his future.
I wonder if he can move into other events. He has potential with the 200im and 200 breast
He also has a really good 200 fly as well. Also, his 200 free has been pretty good was well. I think that we was 1:35 or faster this year.

Great point
