Chalmers Hits 1:48 200FR, Duncan Wins Twice on Day 4 of S. AUS Champs

2016 SOUTH AUSTRALIAN LONG COURSE STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS

17-year-olds Kyle Chalmers and Abby Duncan each won a pair of events to highlight day 4 of the South Australia State Long Course Championships.

Chalmers continued to be the star of the meet, winning the 50 fly and 200 free on the men’s side in his 17-year-old age group. Probably his best result was in the freestyle, where he went 1:48.61 to blow out the field and come within a second and a half of the junior world record.

Chalmers was also 24.42 to win the 50 fly, with Thomas Wotton (24.91 in the fly and 1:53.16 in the 200 free) finishing behind him in both. Chalmers and Wotton were both actually faster than the 19&over winners in both of those races.

Meanwhile in the girls 17-18 age group, Duncan won twice by wide margins. The 17-year-old was 2:20.58 to win the 200 IM by four seconds and 26.52 to take the 50 free by almost half a second.

In the open age group, 30-year-old Sally Hunter nearly took home three event wins. The two-time Olympian paced the 50 free in 25.63 for an easy win, and came back in the next event to win the 200 breast in 2:31.46. Hunter was second in the 100 fly at 1:02.86, with Ellysia Oldsen denying her a third win in 1:01.29.

Chalmers is clearly not in his best shape if you look at his 50 and 100, so that is impressive. Could he get the WJR if he swims this event at trials.
