Chad le Clos Gives Candid Interview After Disappointing Showing in Budapest

2024 SC WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Chad le Clos has swept the men’s butterfly events twice at the Short Course World Championships (2014, 2016) but in Budapest was unable to make the final in any of them. Disappointed with his performances, le Clos said his preparation for this meet was good and he thought he’d perform better. However, the Olympic champion vows to be back in two years and be better.

I never understand why people clamor for swimmers to retire, just because they aren’t quite at the level they used to be. I remember seeing similar comments about Tom Shields for example. That didn’t make sense to me either.

If he still enjoys it and still has sponsors, he should swim as long as he wants. Getting 11th in the world isn’t hurting anyone.

Who will we be more sad to not see anymore when he eventually retires?

Think he should retire. Perhaps its worth it to keep going with his sponsors. At the end of the day few people have a job they truly love so we should not sit in judgment.

Everyone deserves a break, but he’s taking off 3 months? That seems like a lot especially if he wants to be competitive again at the top levels in 2025. The Worlds are in Singapore in July.

Honestly didn’t swim very poorly, especially considering his age. As he said, the world has just gotten much better at short course. Hope he stays happy with the sport, he has nothing left to prove.

Longevity is an overrated metric to measuring greatness. Peak>Longevity.

Le Clos had a great peak and longevity but it’s time to hang it up and flip burgers

Dude is an Olympic champion. Sure he can find better work than that. But yeah he needs to consider retirement soon.

Maybe because of the condescending “flip burgers” remark.

Time for you to stop posting and start flipping burgers.

Time to “Le Close” this chapter of your life mate. You keep saying you’ll be back. You’ve been saying it for years now. Sounds like you’re trying to convince yourself more than anything else.

Always love to see him get humbled and then say “I’ll be back these guys better watch out” and then end up not being back. It’s on its 9th iteration now lol
