For the third night in a row, Carson Foster has swam a best time at Austin Sectionals. On Saturday, Foster swam a 1:55.89 in the men’s 200 backstroke.
Prior to this weekend, Foster’s best stood at a 1:57.28 which he swam at the end of May 2022 back in his home state of Ohio. Saturday’s best time moves him up from being outside of the US top 25 performers ever to now sitting at #14.
Foster’s time also would have finished third at US International Team Trials in April. Foster opted not to swim the event there, instead focusing on the 200 free, 200 IM, and 400 IM. Notably, he qualified for the US Worlds team in all three of those events and won individual silver medals in both the 200 and 400 IMs.
This time also would have finished fourth at the 2022 World Championships. Ryan Murphy and Shaine Casas of the United States finished first and third in the event at Worlds respectively.
Foster’s splits were:

Foster only had about a four-second fall off from his first to second 100. Notably, his last two 50 splits were about dead even.
Last night, Foster swam a 3:45.29 in the 400 freestyle during a time trial to become the #10 US performer of all-time. Foster opted not to swim the event Saturday as he declared a false start, instead focusing on the 200 backstroke. Two nights ago, Foster swam a 1:53.67 in the 200 butterfly to become the #3 American in the event ever.
Foster has told SwimSwam that he will be taking a break now and will not be attending US National in Irvine later this month. The 200 backstroke was his last scheduled event of Sectionals.

Some real great swims. Is it just me, or does it seem like Carson is at his best when he knows he’s the best in the field?
Reminds me of LeBron James led teams. Great when they are front runners, things get a little tight when adversity hits.
Would love to see him keep this up on the World stage!
Has anyone but phelps, male or female, ever had such a fast 200 in 3 different strokes?
Ryan Lochte 200 IM 1:54, 200 back 1:52.9, 200 free 1:44.9 He might have been fast on the 200 fly but he rarely swam it. Katinka Hosszu 200 free 1:55, 200 IM 2:06, 200 back 2:05, 200 fly 2:04, 200 breast 2:29
Tracy Caulkins could swim everything.
SCY Seliskar in the 2fly, 2breast and 2free is pretty incredible.
Carson seems to swim well on an extensive taper
Not entirely applicable at the moment, but FINA should follow IAAF’s lead and give world champs a bye for the next edition. It lets the champs to save up a bit and gives other racers in the champs’ home countries a chance to shine
Carson’s butterfly seems ahead of his backstroke. Although it is a great time.
Casas needs to choose his schedule better.
50.5 for Casas… Do people remember when he said he was a butterflier but that it just hasn’t come out yet?…

Kid is on a tear, he must love this meet after the 4:08 400 IM last year
We’ll see if this fuels him and gives him the confidence to jump to the next level that’ll put him with the greats / face of men’s USA swimming
He needs gold medals for that and he has some pretty big obstacles in all his events.
Yeah, the gold medal challenge is what he’s facing at this point.
He has two years to improve and catapult himself past his competitors to the very top of the podium.
Improving his breaststroke is his only chance for gold, 200 free/fly are locked down. Maybe 200 back will open up.
While I think the 200 fly is his best swim of the meet, adding this to the list of great swims he has had this week is very impressive. Carson is turning into a real all-around threat.
His NCAA lineup next year lookin really interesting. 500 free vs 200 IM, 200 free vs 400 IM, 200 back vs 200 fly. He’s def an IMer but he’s gotta consider maybe swimming some free at NCAAs as they might give him a better shot at the title than facing Marchand in the IMs
