World champion Carson Foster switched things up a bit in his training since February. At the San Antonio pro swim, Foster discussed losing weight and ramping up his aerobic base after the Doha World Championships.
He seems super happy
Unpopular opinion but that insight tells us why we haven’t seen a taper hit for the whole team in almost a decade. When you have a plan that works it works for most and you use your feel for the outliers. If you go solely based on feel you hit and miss across the board
This isn’t the first time that I’ve heard Eddie flies by the seat of his pants. I think it just gets dismissed because he has so much success and experience. But if you’re not planning stuff out and evaluating the plan after the fact, it does leave growth opportunities to be missed.
However, there is merit to having a plan and deviating from the plan if something’s not working with it. Flexibility is also important.
Correct. And that plan should improve as you collect data from year to year. Hence the word science. But you always need a little flexibility in order to help everyone
I remember reading somewhere (I think the Swim Coaching Bible?) that Gary Hall Jr., when tapering for NCAA, felt awful in the water and Eddie told him to take the week off from swimming. Gary proceeded to swim well at NCAA.
Gary is an interesting case. By his own account, he was useless all year until taper. He was also gone after the first year.
I don’t know if any swim program in the early 90s would have fit his drop-dead sprinter training style or if he was able to swim fast year round.
what a likeable kid. I loved in 2021 right after the Olympics he time trialed the 4 IM and did a time that would have won gold.
Agreed on Carson being likeable. Just a correction on your second point — Carson went 4:08 about a month after Trials at a Sectionals meet. https://staging2.swimswam.com/carson-foster-swims-400-im-in-408-46-would-have-won-olympic-trials/
Who gives a f
Swimmers are geeks. If you don’t care for semantics then you’re in the minority.
I’m interested to see how he does training with Leon
I can’t see it happening. It’d be like MP and Lochte training together. Maybe Carson will switch to the Florida pro group?
Keep in mind that Eddie will be training Carson through the Olympic trials.
Carson has already stated he is excited to get to work with Bowman.
Did you watch the video?
I’m excited to see the potential Olympic 4 IM podium train together
Such a nice, open, genuine guy. Respect.
