The relay team of Sammie Burchill, Alex Clarke, Veronica Burchill, and Amy Bilquist earned the top seed in the women’s 200 medley relay at the Indiana High School State Championships with a new national public high school record of 1:40.33. Last year at the same meet, Carmel broke the national record at the 2014 HS State Championships, with their time of 1:40.83. This year they have lowered it again by a half second, and now hold both the national public school record and the overall high school record. Carondelet HS in California currently holds the independent school record at 1:40.73.
To add some excitement to the swim, Carmel’s top backstroker, Claire Adams, did not swim the backstroke leg of the event. She is listed as an alternate for the event, however, and could be on the relay tomorrow during finals.
Last year, Carmel became the first women’s team in history to break all three national high school relay records in one meet. They appear to be on pace to do that for a second time this year.
