Carl Bloebaum and Logan Robinson Tied for 16th in 200 Fly; Swim-Off Avoided (UPDATED)

2024 U.S. OLYMPIC TRIALS

UPDATED: There will be no swim-off as Chase Kalisz (7th out of prelims) has scratched semifinals.

A 200-meter butterfly swim-off. For many, it’s the stuff of nightmares. But for Carl Bloebaum and Logan Robinson, it represents the chance to swim in the Olympic Trials semifinal.

During the event prelims on Day 4 of U.S. Trials, Bloebaum and Robinson tied for 16th place in 1:58.37, from the early heats. Bloebaum won heat two from lane 1, and Robinson matched his time to win the very next heat.

Carl Bloebaum, 2024 U.S. OLYMPIC TRIALS PRELIM Logan Robinson, 2024 U.S. OLYMPIC TRIALS PRELIM
50 26.77 27.02
100 55.48 (28.71) 56.26 (29.24)
150 1:26.91 (31.43) 1:27.85 (31.59)
200 1:58.37 (31.46) 1:58.37 (30.52)

Bloebaum opened the race quickly, and Robinson trailed his pace through the first 150 meters. But, the GPAC swimmer made his move on the closing 50, splitting almost a second faster than Bloebaum’s final 50 meters, 30.52 to 31.46, to stop the clock for the same time.

Bloebaum’s lifetime best is a 1:58.04, but this swim is the third best of his career and his fastest in two years. He returned to NCAA competition for the Hokies this season after a rough freshman season in 2022-23 where, among other things, he broke his elbow and had mono. He was in the transfer portal for about three months but ultimately decided to stay at Virginia Tech.

Robinson is committed to join the Florida State roster this fall. This prelims swim was a lifetime best for him as he broke 2:00 for the first time, dropping 1.67 seconds from his previous standard, swum at the 2023 Junior Nationals.
