Canadian Worlds Report, Day 2 Prelims: Savard To Fly in Finals

BARCELONA – Noemie Thomas of Richmond, B.C., and Katerine Savard of Pont-Rouge, Que., will swim for medals in the 100-metre butterfly at the FINA World Championships tonight in Barcelona. 

Two other Canadian swimmers will join Canada’s fly girls in the evening session after qualifying for semifinals on Monday, Day 2 of the eight-day championships.

Sinead Russell of Burlington, Ont., was eighth-fastest in the women’s 100-metre backstroke at 1:00.87 and will look to qualify for finals tonight. Joining her in semifinal action is Charles Francis of Cowansville, Que., who qualified for semifinals in 16th position with a time of 54.72.

Thomas and Savard qualified in Sunday’s semifinals. Thomas, 17, sits fifth with a semifinal time of 57.99, 0.01 ahead of the sixth-ranked Savard. The 20-year-old Savard swam a 57:31 Sunday morning to better her own national record.

Meanwhile, Kristina Steins of Peterborough, Ont., made her world championships debut, finishing 32nd in the 100-m backstroke (1:03.15). Tera Van Beilen of Oakville, Ont., and Blake Worsley of Vancouver rounded out the morning slate for Canada. Van Beilen was 28th in women’s 100-m breaststroke at 1:09.45 while Worsley went 1:49.30 in the men’s 200-m freestyle, also a 28th-place finish.
