The nation of Canada came up big tonight in Budapest, medaling in four out of the five finals to make a move in the overall swimming medal table at these World Championships.
15-year-old Summer McIntosh kicked off the night in style with a new World Junior Record of 2:05.20 to take the women’s 200m fly, setting the tone for night 5.
Immediately in the next event, it was speedster Josh Liendo‘s turn on the podium, giving Canada bronze in the men’s 100m free behind winner David Popovici of Romania and silver medalist Maxime Grousset of France.
Kylie Masse put the maple leaf squad back up on top in the women’s 50m back, winning that event in 27.31 before the Canadian women’s 4x200m free relay scored bronze behind the Championships Record-setting United States and runners-up Australia.
Canada now ranks 4th in the swimming medal table with 3 more days of competition remaining, owning 2 golds, 3 silvers and 2 bronze medals. Already that’s only 1 piece of hardware below where the nation stood at the end of the 2019 World Championships in Gwangju, Korea, where Canada reaped 8 total medals, including 2 gold and 6 bronze.
The only event in which a Canadian did not medal was the men’s 200m IM. In that tightly-fought race, it was Frenchman Leon Marchand‘s time to shine, picking up his 2nd gold behind his already monster performance in the 400m IM earlier in the meet.
Carson Foster of the United States snagged 2IM silver while Japanese Olympian Daiya Seto scored the bronze.
For medal table leaders of the United States, they further distanced themselves with medal-worthy performances to the tune of Hali Flickinger nabbing 200m fly silver and Katharine Berkhoff producing 50m back silver.
