BUIES CREEK, N.C. — Campbell University swimming continued its strong start the 2018-19 season, topping East Carolina and Lenoir-Rhyne in a tri-meet inside the Johnson Aquatic Center on Saturday afternoon. The Camels defeated ECU, 140-121, and Lenoir-Rhyne, 219-39.
CU moves to 5-2 on the season with the pair of victories. ECU also defeated Lenoir-Rhyne, 173-85.
Campbell bookended the meet by winning both relay events. The team of Megan Everritt, Taylor McMinn, Maddie Baiotto and Sarah Wilson took the 400 medley relay in 3:52.78, while Neringa Cerniauskaite, Annie Sanchez, Hannah Kendall and Sarah Wilson won the 200 free relay in 1:35.61.
For the sixth consecutive meet, Sanchez finished first in the 200 free, this time with a personal best time of 1:52.35. ECU’s Catherine Johnson won the 100 free, but Sanchez, Wilson, Cerniauskaite and Kendall finished two through five to earn Campbell valuable points.
Campbell swept the backstroke events as Everritt swam the 100 back in 57.82 seconds and Kesley Tunstall took the 200 back with a time of 2:07.25.
Maddie Baiotto picked up CU’s final individual win in the 100 fly, posting a mark of 56.43 seconds.
The Camels posted second-place finishes in both of the distance events as Megan Shoemaker finished the 1000 free in 10:47.40 and Annie Sanchez swam the 500 free in 5:10.25.
Campbell will begin preparing for the Liberty Invitational, which lasts from Nov. 16-18 in Lynchburg, Va.

BUIES CREEK, N.C. — The ECU men’s swim team won 14 of 14 events and improved to 3-1 as the Pirates defeated Lenoir Rhyne, 154-97, Saturday afternoon at the Johnson Natatorium on the campus of Campbell University. Freshman Marek Osina claimed three individual victories and freshman Ethan Knorr collected two.
The ECU women’s swimming and diving team earned a split in its tri-meet with Lenoir-Rhyne and host Campbell, defeating LRC 173-85 and losing to the Camels 140-121 as the Pirates improved to 3-2 overall. Junior Lily West earned a trio of first-place finishes and junior Catherine Johnson swept the spring freestyle events.
“We had the opportunity to mix up our line up and swim some different events on the men’s side today and the guys posted some good times,” Pirate head coach Matthew Jabs said. “Hats off to Campbell. Those girls were excited and ready to race. We struggled in both aspects today. We got better as the meet went on, but it was too little too late.”
Osina remained undefeated during individual events with three wins today, winning the 100 backstroke (50.80), 200 breaststroke (2:04.72) and 200 individual medley (1:54.94). Each one of his triumphs was by more than two seconds.
Knorr won the 1000 freestyle by more than 18 seconds in front of runner-up Manny Alvarez with a time of 9:56.96. He later edged fellow rookie Ryan Brennan by 16 hundredths of a second to win the 200 backstroke (1:56.24).
On the women’s side, West swept the breaststroke events, winning the 100 (1:05.54) and 200 (2:21.32) before touching first in the 200 individual medley (2:10.02).
Johnson beat Campbell’s Sarah Wilson by 0.40 to win the 50 freestyle (23.81) and Camel freshman Annie Sanchez by 0.16 to win the 100 freestyle (52.05).
ECU freshman Marianna Vignoli captured first-place in the 1000 freestyle (10:28.33) by more than 19 second ahead of second-place finished Megan Shoemaker of Campbell and nearly nine seconds better than Sanchez to win the 500 freestyle (5:04.36).
While the swimming teams were competing in Buies Creek, the ECU diving teams were hosting Duke and Richmond at Minges Natatorium.
Mary Warker posted the ladies’ top scores on both boards, finishing fifth on the 3-meter springboard (272.15) and seventh on the 1-meter (251.85). Devin Nugent took fourth-place in both the men’s 1-meter (296.95) and 3-meter (307.25) competitions.
“We will now turn our focus to the Georgia Tech Invitational,” Jabs said. “This will be one of the fastest meets in the country. Our approach will transition more towards our individual performances, with less focus on team standings. Excited to see how our athletes stack up against some of the nation’s best.”
The Georgia Tech Invitational runs Nov. 15-17 in Atlanta.

Buies Creek, N.C. – The Lenoir-Rhyne University’s Women’s Swimming Team fell to both ECU –173–85– and Campbell –219–39– Saturday afternoon at the Johnson Aquatic Center. In the other contest, Campbell beat ECU 140–121.
The women’s top finish came in the first event, the 400-yard medley relay, where they found themselves in sixth-place. The team consisting of sophomore Kiana Schumacher (Fort Branch, Ind.), freshman Kimberly Scheiber (Pleizenhausen, Germany), junior Jessica Myers (York, S.C.), and freshman Elizabeth Bowman (Thomasville, N.C.) finished in a time of 4:14.81.
Lenoir-Rhyne Women’s Swimming competes next in the Fall Frenzy taking place Friday, November 16th through Sunday, November 18th, in Charlotte, N.C., at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center.
The Lenoir-Rhyne University Men’s Swimming Team lost to ECU – 154–97 – in their dual meet Saturday afternoon at the Johnson Aquatic Center.
The men fared well against their Division I counterpart, placing third in the 400-yard medley relay and second in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The 400-yard medley team, consisting of freshman Jacob Greene (Lewisville, N.C.), junior Jacob Queen (Hickory, N.C.), freshman Alex Ballard (Winston-Salem, N.C.), and sophomore Spencer Ashby (Spartanburg, S.C.), finished in a time of 3:34.30. While the 200-yard freestyle relay team, consisting of Queen, Ashby, junior Seth Hurst (Clover, S.C.), and junior Dillon Carey (Denver, N.C.), finished in a time of 1:29.67.
The Bears were led by a pair of second-place finishes. Senior Jacob Sink (Advance, N.C.) finished the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:01.12, while Ashby finished the 200-yard individual medley in a time of 2:00.28.
In addition, the Bears had multiple third-place finishes including: freshman Wyatt Hoyle (Winston-Salem, N.C.) in the 1000-yard freestyle (10:33.20); Queen in the 200-yard freestyle (1:44.18) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:09.33); senior Preston Goforth (Mebane, N.C.) in the 100-yard backstroke (1:00.13); Ballard in the 200-yard butterfly (1:57.32); Greene in the 200-yard backstroke (1:56.91); and freshman John Ryan (Cummings, Ga.) in the 100-yard butterfly (53.86).
