RIVERSIDE – Evan Honer’s dominance on the diving boards reached new heights in California Baptist University’s home dual versus Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Friday.
The freshman phenom set two personal bests and a new Lancer record in the process, as he won both boards yet again. Matthew Niculae and Sean Foster also won multiple individual events to help CBU defeat the Stags 143-95.
The Lancers posted the best marks in 12 of 13 events on the day at the Lancer Aquatics Center. CBU improves to 3-2 in dual competition this season and will next host Western Athletic Conference foe Wyoming on Thursday at 1 p.m. The divers will then take part in the UCLA Bruin Diving Invitational Friday, Jan. 17 through Sunday, Jan. 19.
Honer set a new program record on the 3-meter board, as he won the event with 369.23 points. It was well above the previous CBU best of 359.10 set by Zach Parry in 2017-18. Honer opened the day with a 329.40 score on 1-meter, which was a new personal best and moves him up to third in Lancer history on that event.
Foster posted the fastest times of the day in both the 300 back (3:19.52) and 300 breaststroke (3:19.52), while Niculae won both 100 and 200-yard freestyles, with respective times of 46.46 seconds and 1:45.05 for CBU.
Jacob Leahy (46.67) and Josh Walters (47.85) pushed Niculae in the 100 free before taking second and third for the Lancers. Zane Freeman and Tyler Stevens finished top-four on both boards Friday. Freeman took second on 3-meter (335.48) and third at 1-meter (286.73).
Five other Lancers won races on Friday. Dylan Sweikert did so in the 1000 free (9:55.18), Leahy touched first in the 50 free (21.25), Joe Molinari took the 300 individual medley (2:59.19), Adityastha Wratsangka won the 300 butterfly (3:01.33) and Robert Moseley claimed the 300 back (2:57.59).
The Lancers started the day by sweeping the top-two positions in the 500-medley relay. It was the B team of Molinari, Colton Babcock, Wratsangka and Payton Thomas that won the event in 4:37.18, while the A team of Moseley, Foster, David Miller and Kyle White took second (4:38.72).
CBU’s Dylan Sweikert, Walters, Leahy and Niculae swam the fastest time in the 500-free relay (4:08.12).
Depth in distance was evident for CBU, as it swept first through third in the 300 IM and 300 back. Moseley (2:59.26) and Foster (3:03.13) took second and third in the 300 IM, while Molinari (2:58.52) and Trevor Van Law (3:03.32) did so in the 300 back.
Walters, Wratsangka and Miller added runner-up swims in the 50 free (21.36), 500 free (4:45.65) and 300 fly (3:01.88).
RIVERSIDE — Madeline Wiese won three events – two diving and one swimming – to play a big part in California Baptist University defeating Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 128-115 with a shorthanded squad.
The Lancers were out nine key swimmers due to injuries and illness on Friday at the Lancer Aquatics Center, but got big days from several individuals to put them over the top of an Athenas team that ranks 11th in NCAA Division III.
CBU improves to 2-2-1 in dual competition this season. The Lancers will next host Western Athletic Conference foe Wyoming on Thursday at 1 p.m. and the divers will then take part in the UCLA Bruin Diving Invitational Friday, Jan. 17 through Sunday, Jan. 19.
In just her second event diving for the Lancers, Wiese swept both boards with 275.10 points on 3-meter and 272.18 at 1-meter. Both scores are historically significant and rank top three in CBU’s record book.
Swimmers Rebeca Oviedo and Rita Smirnova also won three events for the Lancers. They both swam on the victorious 500-yard freestyle relay team with Wiese and Hannah Parson. The quartet locked up the team win in the final event of the day when they hit the wall in four minutes and 42.51 seconds.
Smirnova swept the 50 (24.54) and 100 frees (53.12). Oviedo also won the 200 and 500-yard freestyles with respective times of 1:55.97 and 5:11.56.
Nicole Cienega logged another victory for CBU in the 300 butterfly (3:14.21) and also took second in the 300 individual medley (3:25.85).
Diving really proved to be the difference-maker for CBU. The Lancers not only won both boards, but swept first through third each time, as well. Kiree Lowe took second place on both 1-meter (249.68) and 3-meter (261.15), while Savannah Uhlir took third both times with respective scores of 246.60 and 257.85 and Madison Liu took fourth in each event.

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men’s swimming and diving team returned to action after a five-week layoff and had some strong swims against California Baptist, in its first year of Division I competition, but finished on the short end of a 143-95 score on Friday afternoon in the annual distance meet between the programs.
With the loss, the Stags move to 4-2 on the season, with both defeats coming to programs which are in transition to Division I (UC San Diego being the other). The CBU distance meet wasn’t conducted as a traditional dual, with 300-yard races in the IM, breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly, instead of the standard 100-yard and 200-yard competitions, while the freestyle and medley relays both covered 500 yards instead of the traditional 200-yard and 400-yard races.
Sophomore Michael Lee had an individual win for CMS in the 500-yard freestyle, touching the wall in 4:44.82 to edge out California Baptist’s Adityastha Wratsangka in 4:45.64, while junior Kyrellos Ibrahim was the third-place finisher in 4:46.07. Lee almost had two individual wins, but was edged out in the 200-yard freestyle by just .22, finishing in 1:45.27 to the winning time of 1:45.05 from Matthew Niculae of CBU. Senior Alex Moody came in third place in the 200 for the Stags, while first-year Anderson Breazeale was in fourth.
Senior Ben Culberson nearly had another win for the Stags, but finished in second place in a furious race to the wall in the 1000-yard freestyle, coming up just .04 behind Dylan Sweikert of Cal Baptist (9:55.18 to 9:55.22). CMS also had the third and fourth place finishers in the race, as junior Abel Sapirstein came in third place, with sophomore Matthew Waddell behind him in fourth.
Junior Andreas Roeseler had a close race in the 50 free, but ended up third in 21.50, a quarter-second behind the winning back of 21.25 from Jacob Leahy of CBU. Senior Henry Limm was second in the 300-yard backstroke in 3:20.78 and senior Kendall Hollimon was second in the one-meter dive.
The meet concluded with the 500-yard freestyle relay, with first-year Nathan Luis, Roeseler, Lee and Breazeale battling close for much of the race before finishing second in 4:11.67.
CMS will be back in action tomorrow when it returns to SCIAC competition for a road dual meet against La Verne, starting with diving at 10 a.m.
RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women’s swimming and diving team put up a strong challenge against a California Baptist program that is in transition to Division I, with the race coming right down to final relay, but came up just short 128-115 in the annual distance meet between the programs on Friday afternoon.
The Athenas, who had been idle for the last five weeks since defeating Pomona-Pitzer in a two-day dual on Dec. 6-7, now stand at 4-2 on the season in dual competition, with both defeats coming to programs moving to Division I (UC San Diego being the other). The California Baptist Distance Meet wasn’t a true dual, with the backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, and IM all featuring 300-yard races, instead of the standard 100-yard and 200-yard distances, and the medley and freestyle relays both covering 500 yards, instead of the normal 200-yard and 400-yard races.
CMS opened the dual by winning the 500-yard medley relay, as the Athena team of junior Christina Campbell (backstroke), sophomore Augusta Lewis (breaststroke), sophomore Ava Sealander (butterfly) and junior Natalia Orbach-Mandel (freestyle) won the race in 5:18.42, beating out the Cal Baptist “A” team (5:23.19) by almost five seconds.
Lewis, the reigning SCIAC Swimmer of the Year, took first-place finishes in the 300-yard individual medley and the 300-yard breaststroke, winning both races by just over six seconds. She earned her IM victory by clocking a time of 3:19.81, and then captured the 300 breast in 3:39.64.
Campbell also had a first-place finish in the 300-yard backstroke, winning by just under five seconds with a final time of 3:20.77, while sophomore Natalie Larsen was a close third in 3:25.74. Campbell added a second-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:57.50, followed in third by junior Allie Umemoto, who was competing in her first event after studying abroad in the fall.
First-year Ella Blake came up with a win in the 1000-yard freestyle in the first individual event of the meet, touching the wall in 10:42.36 for a margin of victory of just over four seconds, while first-year Gracey Hiebert came in third in 10:49.92. Blake also came in second in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:13.87 to add four more points to the CMS total.
First-year Annika Johnson finished a close second in the 300-yard butterfly, ending in 3:14.59 to finish just behind Nicole Cienega of Cal Baptist in 3:14.21, while first-year Arisa Cowe was in third place. Sealander was also a close second in the 50 free, finishing in 24.64 to finish one-tenth of a second behind Rita Smirnova of Cal Baptist.
The 500-yard freestyle relay team capped off the meet with a second-place finish, as first-year Suzanne Starzyk, junior Janet Tran, Orbach-Mandel and Blake finished in 4:44.16, less than two seconds off the pace.
CMS will be back in action tomorrow when it returns to SCIAC competition with a road meet against La Verne, beginning with diving at 10 a.m.
