The state of California is hoping to “fully reopen” on June 15, if the state can meet certain vaccination and hospitalization benchmarks.
Governor Gavin Newsom announced the plan yesterday, noting that the state had administered 20 million vaccines for COVID-19. The state will continue to require masks even after that June 15 date, and will encourage all residents to be vaccinated.
Newsom’s announcement hinges on two key benchmarks:
- That vaccine supply is sufficient for all Californians age 16 or older who want to be vaccinated
- That hospitalization rates remain “stable and low”
If those two criteria are met, Newsom says the state will fully reopen. That includes daily activities and businesses, though “common-sense risk reduction measures” will still apply.
“We can now begin planning for our lives post-pandemic,” Newsom said in the press release. “We will need to remain vigilant, and continue the practices that got us here – wearing masks and getting vaccinated – but the light at the end of this tunnel has never been brighter.”
Swim clubs in California have struggled with a patchwork of local restrictions on youth sports and pool access, despite the state classifying swimming in the lowest-risk of its four tiers for youth and adult sports. An April 6 update to those sports guidelines suggests that spectators will be permitted at outdoor live events. Team are still not allowed to cross state lines to compete, or to compete against any teams outside of the state of California.
Clubs and LSCs have criticized the policies, noting that membership has dropped sharply amid the coronavirus restrictions. On the flip side, the Centers for Disease Control has warned that youth sports have created COVID-19 clusters in various states and allowed the virus to spread among children.
“Team are still not allowed to cross state lines to compete, or to compete against any teams outside of the state of California.”
Umm, did anyone tell the CA kids at out of state sectionals they weren’t supposed to be there?
It was interesting hearing stories at sectionals of CA families that now have second homes in non restricted states. To what length for our kids….?
For the families that have multiple homes I’m pretty sure their kids are doing ok
what’s with having to wear masks even after getting the vaccine? why would I get it if I still have to wear a mask?
It’s still possible to contract and transmit the virus even after having been vaccinated.
“possible” but extremely unlikely – unlikely enough to not worry about it and gather indoors with unvaccinated people in small numbers as CDC guidelines explain. Get vaccinated and live your life with good common sense!
They need to get to a certain benchmark of vaccinations in the population to reduce mutations of the virus spreading at high rates.
If that happens and it changes enough the current vaccine may not be effective and we will have to start this over again.
Imagine allowing Disneyland to open but not pools 🤡🤡
Disney has big clout being a large corporation. Also, the city of Anaheim complain about it being closed since Disneyland is their main source of income. Its not fair, but because Disney and the city of Anaheim put pressure on local politicians it opens at 25 percent capacity for the rides on April 30th, Before some of the retail and restraunts were open.
