SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – In its final meet before the conference championships, Cal Poly swimming and diving earned a commanding dual victory over UC Santa Cruz on Saturday, losing only one event.
The men grabbed a 164-114 win over the Banana Slugs, while the women emerged victorious 157-123.
Prior to the dual at Anderson Aquatic Center, the Mustangs honored their 10 seniors – Kaia Anderson, Amy Harter, Ryan Iannaccone, Sophie Jackson, Caroline Judson, Erin Kim, Max Powell, Samantha Rankin, Jacqueline Samaniego and Brian Wong.
The seniors led the way against UC Santa Cruz, securing 11 of Cal Poly’s 27 individual victories.
The Mustangs swept the diving events as Powell earned first in the men’s 1-meter and 3-meter dives and Samaniego secured wins in the women’s 1-meter and 3-meter dives.
Iannaccone grabbed wins in the 50-yard freestyle and 100 freestyle for the men. Freshman Alex Seybold placed first in the 100 breaststroke and 200 breaststroke, while junior Ryan Trichler earned victories in the 200 butterfly and 200 individual medley.
Freshmen Nick Elliott (500 free), Mac Follmer (100 fly), Cole Groom (1000 free), Drew Huston (100 backstroke) Andrew Sullivan (200 free) and junior Sean Keegan (200 back) all secured individual wins. Junior Joshua Billotte placed second in the 1000 free.
The Mustang men also swept the relays. Freshman Jonathan Butler, Trichler, Wong and Iannaccone led the team to glory in the 200 medley relay (1:33.32), while Butler, Wong, Iannaccone and Sullivan teamed up for victory in the 400 free relay (3:07.43).
On the women’s side, freshman Courtney Cross shined, capturing three wins (100 free, 200 free and 500 free). Her older sister, junior Katie Cross, finished first in the 100 back, while freshman Kiersten Weiler took second.
Rankin snagged victories in the 200 breast and 200 IM, Harter earned first in the 50 free, Kim grabbed the top spot in the 100 fly and Anderson secured her fifth win of the season in the 1000 free.
In the 200 fly, junior Alexa Porter placed first and freshman Katie Treacy second. Freshman Melia Costa took first in the 100 breast.
The Cal Poly women won both relays. In the 400 free relay, an all senior lineup made of Harter, Kim, Jackson and Anderson earned first, while Weiler, Costa, Kim and Harter carried the Mustangs to victory in the 200 medley relay.
The Mustangs will compete in the MPSF Swimming and Diving Championships on Feb. 15-18.

SAN LUIS OBISPO – UC Santa Cruz faced Division I Cal Poly Saturday afternoon to close out their weekend excursion.
The Banana Slugs battled hard against the Mustangs. Although the hosts won every event, UC Santa Cruz got a good practice run racing against their toughest opponent all year with an eye to the Conference and NCAA Championship meets.
Highlights included the 200 Medley Relay squad of Coralie Norenberg, Megan Deevy, Maddy Gruender and Tereza Shea finishing in 1:51.60. In the 50 Free, Gruender and and Norenberg tied for second in 25.31 while Gruender won the 200 Back in 2:09.74. Massimo Reyna had a standout meet, with runner-up finishes in the men’s 200 Free (1:44.01) and 100 Fly (53.08).
He was also part of the runner-up 400 Free Relay quartet with Drake Southern, Briggs Cloutier and Samuel Smith.
On Friday, the Banana Slugs got in the pool against nationally-ranked Pomona-Pitzer. The women dropped their meet 195-97 while the men fell to the Sagehens 184.5-109.5.
Southern won the men’s 50 Free in 21.54 and was second in the 100 Free in 47.44. Aaron Wu placed third in the 200 Fly (2:00.48) and was second in the 100 Fly (52.77). Norenberg was fourth in the 50 Free in 25:05 and second in the women’s 100 Back in 1:01.13, while Elisabeth Lundgren was third in the 100 Back finishing in 1:02.84. Lundgren was also second in the 200 Back in 2:10.72 and led off the 400 Medley Relay with Deevy, Norenberg and Gruender who finished in 4:04.23.
