RIVERSIDE – California Baptist swim and dive dove into 2024 with hosting responsibilities as they hosted their annual dual with Division III powerhouse Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. The Lancers swam well on a chilly but beautiful Friday afternoon, claiming 13 total wins on the men’s and women’s sides, including three relay events.

Mark Kovacsics cruised to a pair of wins, swimming sans cap but still easily claiming victory in the 1,650 and 500 freestyle races. While Kovacsics dominated the distance races for the men, Sofia Maksimova did the same with the sprints for the women. Maksimova earned wins in the 50 and 100 freestyle races and contributed to the 500 freestyle relay win.

The divers were also in action on Friday, beginning the three-day UCLA Diving Invitational in Westwood. Natalia Bedolla was the sole female representative for the Lancer women in the 1-meter finals on Friday, posting a two-round final score of 505.65 to earn 17th place. Mario Del Valle led a trio of CBU men in the 3-meter final, placing ninth in the event with a combined score of 596.25. Gael Jimenez saw his first action of the 2023-24 season today, claiming 11th place with a score of 584 even. The final Lancer finalist was John Angelovic, who claimed 16th overall with a final tally of 523 flat.

The Lancer swim side will pull double duty this weekend by competing in back-to-back meets. After hosting on Friday, CBU will travel to Malibu to take on UC Santa Barbara. The divers will compete in day two of the UCLA Diving Invitational, which will see the women move up to the 3-meter board while the men take on the levels of the platform discipline.
