Today, August 16th, is the 17th birthday of Bolles swimmer Caeleb Dressel, meaning that when he travels to the 2013 FINA World Junior Championships in a couple of weeks, he will be gunning for a whole new set of National Age Group Records.
That shouldn’t be a great challenge for him, however; he beat some of the 15-16 records by so much, that he’s not far from the 17-18 records. In fact, last week, he briefly had the 15-16 record faster than the 17-18 record in the 50 long course meters freestyle.
Dressel currently has 5 National Age Group Records. See the chart below to find out how far away he is from breaking the 17-18 records.
Dressel’s 15-16 records | 17-18 Records | |
50 yard free | 19.82 | Seth Stubblefield – 19.41 |
100 yard free | 43.29 | David Nolan – 42.34 |
50 meter free | 22.39 | Santo Condorelli – 22.32 |
100 meter free | 49.28 | Michael Phelps – 49.05 |
200 meter free | 1:48.64 | Michael Phelps – 1:45.99 |
As you can see, he’s already within reach of those times. Sprinters improvements are always fickle, but aside from maybe the 200 meter free, they’re all probably reachable before his 18th birthday, let alone before his 19th birthday. One of those records belongs to his Bolles teammate Santo Condorelli. Condorelli did his record during finals of the race at Junior Nationals where Dressel did his.

Clearly one of the USA’s brightest young stars. 48.5 or lower is definitely within realistic reach. Also a great kid, impressive on interview.
Bobo- what about the 2 free? 1:46.9?
Why not but his best race is clearly in my opinion the 100 free. He has the speed and the endurance to shine in this race. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him in 48.50 next summer to qualify in the US relay team for Kazan.
Hopefully, it will take faster than a 48.5 to make TEAM USA!
Clear goals for him next year in long course must be to swim under 22 in the 50 free and under 49 in the 100 free. He can also play a qualification in the American relay for 2015.
Sub 22 and still 17 yo?
Thats incredibly superfast.
But judging from his talent, he may do it.
Although I bet he goes sub 49 before sub 22.
USA needs not worry about its mens sprinting with Dressel, Feigen and Adrian in Rio.
have to agree.. sub 49 is more feasible than sub-22
People will have to know that the faster you are the harder is for you to lower your times.
He won´t keep lowering his times at the same rate as he was 1 2 years ago..
How tall is he? How tall he can be? How much muscle he have already? This is some importante questions
I predict, if he continues progressing the way he has, by the end of his 17-18 career he will have PB’s of around 19.3/42.1/1:34.2 and at least a 46.6 100 fly. Great potential in the sprint flys as well!
How tall is he??
I can say I had the privilege to race him… When we were 14… In the 100 breaststroke of all races… And I still lost lol. He’s ridiculously fast! Can’t wait to see what records he breaks next 🙂
As awesome as his accomplishments are and as excitingly close to other age group records, we should take the time to say Happy Birthday. Happy Birthday!
